Brendan Benson :: The AD Interview

Brendan Benson has had quite the time the last few years. After releasing three critically heralded solo records, he joined long time friends Jack White, of the White Stripes, and Patrick Keeler and Jack Lawrence of the Greenhornes, to form the Raconteurs. Releasing two records as a band-mate to the high-profile Jack White did wonders for boosting Benson's presence, and with the . . .

The Very Best :: Warm Heart of Africa

Roughly two years ago, M.I.A did well to introduce the globalization of music to the mainstream world. Her Clash/hip-hop/dance hybrid went far to broaden the tastes of the casual listening audience, and probably without them knowing it. Somewhat independently, Afro-beats, highlife and other traditional African sounds emerged in the white-boy consciousness over the last few years, allowing a band like Vampire Weekend to be a chart-topping certainty. In either case, the music has been best received in a Westernized form--M.I.A.'s hip-hop or VW's pop. It's . . .

2001 :: A Floyd Odyssey (Full Ending Scene)

I happened upon this the other day and bookmarked it. If you (like me) have a jones for the early Floyd, with a serious appreciation for Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, then I just made your day and/or week.  Alright, off to watch it again.

Luke Top :: Friends

Luke Top likes to dabble -- genre-wise that is. If you're local, here in Los Angeles, you've most likely seen Top gigging around town with one of the various projects he's loosely affiliated with -- Cass McCombs, Foreign Born and Paper Cuts to name a few.   And then there's . . .

Swinging Mademoiselle :: ’60s French Girl Groups

Do a quick retail scan and you'll notice there are a number of compilations on the market claiming to round up forgotten French sixties pop nuggets (specifically girl groups). Some of these are fairly good, some decent and some abhorrent. So it goes. As noted several weeks ago, many of my favorite genre compilations are of the 'bootleg' variety, meaning the licensing, etc. is dubious at best. Swinging Mademoiselle, Vol. I & II, which compiles girl group tracks from 1965-1968, is one such collection. I was hipped to this around the same time as the

Scott Walker :: La Chanson De Jacky (Jackie)

Pro-tip: If you're unfamiliar, the Netflix on demand feature, with the Roku player, is pretty ace (not to mention economical).   Through it, I finally got around to viewing the Scott Walker documentary 30 Century Man. As a fan, it is a fascinating, not to mention informative, watch tying up some loose ends in terms of the reclusive crooner's journey from the early

Sevens :: (Ballad Of) The Hip Death Goddess

(Sevens, a recurring feature on Aquarium Drunkard, pays tribute to the art of the individual song.)

I want you to listen to this song, so I'll ask that you trust me and not let the following several sentences sway you from doing so.   The arrival of Ultimate Spinach's 1968 debut album was derided by critics as nothing more than a Boston-based, commercially driven, cash-in project aping the recent West coast "psychedelia . . .

Frankel :: Know (Nick Drake cover)

If you've followed to the tale of Frankel over the past few years you may have noted that the reclusive bard rarely, if ever, performs live anymore.   Frankel's interpretation of Nick Drake's "Know", off the Pink Moon LP, was a highlight of the Frankel solo set (read: without his occasional backing band).   Using loops and a bow it often wandered into a velvety drone circa the Underground's debut album with . . .

Jim Dickinson :: Nov. 15, 1941 – Aug. 15, 2009

"As a producer, it really is all about taste. I'm not the greatest piano player in the world, but I've got damn good taste. I'll sit down and go taste with anybody." -- Jim Dickinson

When writing about music, so many of the words used are focused on the people in the spotlight - the folks with whom we most naturally identify. But the music that we let shape our lives would, at times, mean very little without the contribution of the side players and the producers - the people who truly give the music its nuance and . . .

The Great White Jenkins :: Look Out World (7’€³)

It's been a minute since we've had anything Great White Jenkins related on AD, so let's remedy that now as these guys just keep getting better.   The Virginia based folk-pop group, with readymade bedroom flourishes of blue-eyed soul, toured earlier this summer in support of their new Karl Blau produced 7"-- Side A: "Look Out Word", Side B: "Tell Me Something Good." Fingers crossed for a new full-length in . . .
