Steve Earle :: I Thought You Should Know

I am a big fan of most of Steve Earle's material -- the post-prison/post-addiction stuff in particular. While I do agree with some of the man's politics, some of it does get a little heavy handed for my taste. That's when a song like "I Thought You Should Know" comes in to save the day. A good old fashioned down and out, lovesick tearjerker in the midst of a political album.DOWNLOAD:MP3: become a member or log in.

Simon & Garfunkel :: New York Folk Tales

The music of Simon & Garfunkel has been with me for a long time. I first bought their greatest hits compilation in the sixth grade after overhearing it at a friend's house while his mom listened as she did whatever it is mom's do. I think it was the first "adult" music purchase I ever made...before then my tastes were more along the lines of Ratt and Motley Crue, Zod bless 'em both. I admittingly don't listen to them all that much anymore, but sometimes . . .

Mofro :: Front Porch Soul

Mofro's debut album, Blackwater, was my favorite release of 2002. I loved it...still love it. Southern soul, funk, and front porch blues. A medley of influences spanning Stevie Wonder at his funkiest to Exile-era Stones. That Muscle Schoals sound is dripping all over . . .

Jens Lekman :: Swede Sounds

Jens (left) seated with Erlend OyeI think I first got turned onto Jens music via Swedes Please. Another fine example of an artist whose music I may not have heard if it was not for some of great music blogs out there. Jens morphs from bombastic pop star to Nick Drake-like folkie with ease, mastering both. Listen to this recent NPR interview with the songwriter: Jens Lekman . . .

Whiskeytown :: Those Weren’t The Days

The unreleased album Those Weren't The Days is the missing link between the rural tone of Faithless Street and the more produced/polished sound of the band's follow-up Stranger . . .

Daniel Hutchens/Eric Martinez :: On Tour

One of my favorite rock-n-roll troubadours, Daniel Hutchens, is on the road playing a few acoustic dates paired with guitarist Eric Martinez. Now I've only been to Idaho once, and not to Moscow, but IF Moscow IS indeed near you I would highly recommend checking out their show. If anyone goes to the Portland gigs, please send me an email with the details as a California tour is not in their immediate plans. Don’t F*ck With The Star Room Boys

"Country music lets you write about anything - any truth you think you know."
-- Dave Marr

Hard country and constant sorrow. The Star Room Boys music is steeped heavily in both. My favorite honky-tonk band may be no more, but in their wake they left us with two amazing, heartbreakung albums. **Fans of Dwight Yoakam and Richard Buckner's warble take notice.
