I am a big fan of most of Steve Earle's material -- the post-prison/post-addiction stuff in particular. While I do agree with some of the man's politics, some of it does get a little heavy handed for my taste. That's when a song like "I Thought You Should Know" comes in to save the day. The music of Simon & Garfunkel has been with me for a long time. I first bought their greatest hits compilation in the sixth grade after overhearing it at a friend's house while his mom listened as she did whatever it is mom's do. I think it was the first "adult" music purchase I ever made...before then my tastes were more along the lines of Ratt and Motley Crue, Zod bless 'em both. I admittingly don't listen to them all that much anymore, but sometimes . . .

Mofro's debut album, Blackwater, was my favorite release of 2002. I loved it...still love it. Southern soul, funk, and front porch blues. A medley of influences spanning Stevie Wonder at his funkiest to Exile-era Stones. That Muscle Schoals sound is dripping all over . . .

Hard country and constant sorrow. The Star Room Boys music is steeped heavily in both. My favorite honky-tonk band may be no more, but in their wake they left us with two amazing, heartbreakung albums. **Fans of Dwight Yoakam and Richard Buckner's warble take notice.
