Bongo Joe :: Two Oil Drums And The Truth

Though seemingly lost to history, ‘Bongo Joe’ was one of the best street performers to have ever graced a sidewalk - a musical genius, true outsider artist, DIY instrument builder, and poet-philosopher whose legacy has gone painfully neglected save for those lucky enough to witness his performances. Using a set of discarded oil barrels, a DIY PA system, and custom mallets, Bongo Joe transfixed street audiences across Texas, first performing in Houston, then Galveston, next Fort Worth, and finally San Antonio, where he set up in front of the Alamo for decades . . .

Transmissions :: Floating Points

This week on the show, we’re joined by Sam Shepherd, AKA Floating Points. His discography is full of beautiful and strange electronic music—bubbling Buchalas, skittering beats, washes of synthesized sound, and even moody, spacious post-rock. But underneath it all, his love of jazz is clear. In 2021, he teamed with an actual jazz legend: the late Pharoah Sanders, as well as the London Symphony Orchestra for Promises, a single 46-minute composition broken into nine movements. Today, Floating Points joins us to discuss bringing Promises live to the Hollywood Bowl September 20th . . .

Skyway Man :: The Holding On

On November 3rd, James Wallace, aka Skyway Man, returns with Flight of the Long Distance Healer. Best known for his work on Joe Pera Talks With You and his kaleidoscopic psychedelic pop records, Skyway Man is more than just a character for Wallace to inhabit: "Skyway Man is a vehicle for me to sing more easily about life and love. It’s a superimposed image, always flickering in and out of existence, different each time. Today, he shares the metaphysical sci-fi video for "The Holding On . . .

Known Unknowns :: Religion, UFOs, and Diana Pasukla’s American Cosmic

With her 2019 book, American Cosmic: UFOs, Religion, Technology D.W. Pasulka documents her six-year-long ethnographic study into the belief systems at the root of the UAP phenomenon. Along the way, she interviews influential scientists, Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, astronauts, and former military and government officials, traveling from the deserts of New Mexico to the Vatican archives in Rome. Pasulka’s intent isn’t to persuade or deter from the phenomenon but to understand why—and how—people believe (or don’t believe) in UFOs and aliens from a modern vantage point. Using the history of religion as her . . .

Yuzo Iwata :: Daylight Moon

"Waiting for the guitar to play" concludes a short written piece penned by musician Yuzo Iwata, a memory of observing a jam session outside Tokyo. This Daylight Moon insert is a perfectly suitable precursor to the album: a fascinating, whirlwind relic of the late guitarist. Spiraling, Velvets-inspired guitar textures float between seaside ambiance and complex riffs over gloomy soundscapes. The (mostly) instrumental record grips hold of you as a reminder of the essence of a true psychedelia in sound, rather than the buzzy ambiguity that the term seems to be placated in of late . . .

Pep Laguarda & Tapineria :: Brossa D’ahir

Recorded in the Balearic Island of Mallorca at Bananamoon Observatory Studio, the-then home-studio of psych-pioneer Daevid Allen (Soft Machine, Gong), Brossa D’ahir’s sound is profoundly imbued with the bucolic, coastal atmosphere of its location. The music, dreamy and wandering, is a warm, breezy blend of guitar, bongos, flute, lute, glockenspiel, mandolin, and harmonica, swaying like a hammock in tranquil balance with Laguarda’s voice and the celestial backing vocals of Tapineria’s Joan Marí and additional players . . .

No Way Out: An Oral History of Sunburned Hand of the Man: Loft at Sea

This week, we finish the band’s chronological story then pivot to take in Sunburned’s many artistic collaborators. We hear about the personal impact of the band’s non-stop touring and the eventual burnout that ground things to a halt. Moloney and Thomas then describe how this was followed by several “wilderness years” where the band was just there but they weren’t really doing anything with it . . .

Jerry David DeCicca :: Lost Days

On New Shadows, the latest offering from Jerry David DeCicca, the always astonishing Texas troubadour shares what may be his most personal, internal reflections yet in a glorious left-turn of large, outward production. DeCicca’s dark, romantic, and existential ruminations are both disrupted and beautifully augmented by fat, slinky synths and drum machine beats, horns alternately dour and uplifting, and even the occasional auto tune . . .

David Crosby :: Kids And Dogs (1971)

What more can be said about those hallowed halls of the PERRO sessions? A musical who’s who of the upper echelon of San Francisco at the height of its power. Every cornerstone of the scene was represented in the assemblage, but the ship was helmed by two wayward voyagers—pushing the outer expanses of musical ideation. Often omitted from the varied bootlegs and official releases culled from the sessions, an unsuspecting bit of guitar minimalism would finally see the light of day in 2006. With the deluxe reissue of David Crosby’s magnum opus If I Could Only Remember . . .

Kristin Hersh :: Clear Pond Road

Thirty years ago, shortly after taking leave of Throwing Muses to start Belly, Kristin Hersh made Hips and Makers, a raw, acoustic solo album that throbbed with strings and pulsed with furiously strummed guitar, featured a notable duet with Michael Stipe, and ended up selling more copies than any of Hersh’s other records before or since. It was unamplified, but hardly quiet or well behaved, and about as passionate and stirring as a record can be. Fast forward to 2023, three years after the surprise return of Throwing Muses, and Hersh has circled back again with Clear Pond Road . . .

Transmissions :: Emil Amos (Drifter’s Sympathy)

Welcome back, thanks for being here with us. Emil Amos of the Drifter's Sympathy podcast is with us today on Transmissions. Perhaps you know his work with OM, Grails, Holy Sons, or the records he releases under his own name, like Zone Black, his latest record of library style sounds, synthy 80s soundtracks, hip-hop beats, and ambient music.
