Sandro Perri :: Soft Landing

Last year, Sandro Perri returned with In Another Life, his first proper long-player in the better part of a decade, and a self-proclaimed experiment in “infinite songwriting.” Now Perri has turned around with something of a companion piece: an extension of his immeasurable pop sensibilities in the form of an album entitled Soft Landing . . .

Ruth Garbus :: The Aquarium Drunkard Interview

We recently caught up with singer-songwriter Ruth Garbus to delve deeper into the gorgeous, greyscale world she spins on her new lp, Kleinmeister. Garbus’ hyper-specific lyrics are rendered timeless when delivered in her expressive mezzo-soprano and supported by the thrum of her signature rhythm guitar playing. This latest record highlights these two forces at their most bare, and draws upon a diverse array of influences . . .

Rolling Stones :: Jah Is Not Dead (1979)

How you like your Stones? Late seventies debauched and nasty? Us too.

Dig this: Rolling Stones: Sympathy for the Disco (outtakes '75-'79). '...a very selective sampling of Ron Wood era outtakes, focusing on the band’s half-formed funk/disco/jam persona...long, unedited basic takes of songs that were finished and released between ’75 and ’81 . . .

Screamin’ Jay Hawkins :: The Bizarre Years

A new collection from Real Gone Music, "Screamin' Jay Hawkins: The Bizarre Years," plucks selections from his albums for the imprint, confirming that right up until the very end, Hawkins was interested in theatrical provocation, gross-out humor, and wild antics . . .

Tinariwen :: The Aquarium Drunkard Interview

Tinariwen's eighth album, "Amadjar," was conceived on the road. Following an appearance Taragalte Festival in the Moroccan Sahara, the group traveled to Mauritania trailed by their French production team, in a camper van. Songs were put together during this road trip in a traditional Tamasheq manner, built up via conversations and playing around campfires . . .

The Lagniappe Sessions :: Mikal Cronin (Third Session)

California singer-songwriter Mikal Cronin returns with his third Lagniappe Session. If by design, coincidence or otherwise, Cronin's temporarily adopted home of Idyllwild, CA (nestled in the San Jacinto Mountains east of Los Angeles), seems to have bled into the relaxed atmosphere of the following covers. Put a glass to the wall and listen in, as Cronin transmutes a late 90s pop-radio staple, paints a Replacements tune in Moog and brass, and salutes the late, great Blaze Foley . . .

André Ethier :: Croak in the Weeds

Modern Nature :: A Soundtrack/Score Companion

Constant readers will no doubt recognize the name Jack Cooper, whose former project (Ultimate Painting) remains an in-house favorite. Following a stripped back solo venture, 2017's Sandgrown, Cooper returns with a group proper - Modern Nature - who have just released their debut full-length, How To Live. While anchored by Cooper, the record's grooves find a formidable cast of players exploring myriad veins of Kosmische Musik, British folk traditions, and beyond - all underpinned with an oblique sense of otherness . . .
