One of the most unique, unheralded albums of the 60s, the C.A. Quintet's Trip Thru Hell was a small indie pressing of under 500 from the Candy Floss label, making it a very rare 1968/1969 release. Originals will set you back a pretty penny, but for the die hard may be worth it considering the CD version does not faithfully recreate the back side . . .

As any casual viewer of David Simon's Treme will tell you, it's nearly impossible to define and understand New Orleans and its citizens apart from their music. For years, and particularly since Hurricane Katrina battered the city's levees in August of 2005, the city has been viewed through the funked-out filter of the jazz, early rock, r&b, and hip-hop that has rolled up its bowl and into the wider world. A highlight of Lou Reed's 1989 album New York, "Halloween Parade" is as evocative as it is chilling. Through a processional cast of characters the track chronicles the decade's AIDS epidemic and the friends Reed lost to it. I picked up Hunter S. Thompson's The Rum Diary upon its '98 release and then kept up with tales of a supposed film adaptation for years afterwards. Bouncing in and out of development and pre-production, by the mid '00s most fans had largely given up any hope of the film coming to fruition. But alas, in 2009 -- apparently defying considerable odds -- filming commenced in Puerto Rico, helmed by director Bruce Robinson, with Johnny Depp once again reprising his role of become a member or log in.
You'd be forgiven for not realizing it had been seven years since the last Tom Waits album of new material. Between the enormous wealth of fantastic, previously unreleased songs on 2006's Orphans boxset and the 2008 Glitter and Doom tour and subsequent live album, it hardly seems like Waits was relaxing exactly. But it's also not the first time that Waits has taken an extended hiatus from releasing new work. There were large gaps between 1987's Franks Wild Years and 1992's Bone Machine and between 1993 . . .
