Off The Record :: The Idaho Falls, Los Angeles (Rancho Park)

Off The Record is a recurring feature here on the Drunkard that marries two of my greatest interests; music and travel. Having a locals perspective when visiting a new locale is the difference between experiencing it through the lens of a tourist and of that of a native.

Off The Record gathers some of my favorite artists, asks them to reflect on their city of residence, and choose a handful of places they could not live without -- be them bookstores, bars, restaurants or vistas.

Off the top of my head we have featured our hometown ten to fifteen times; from Long Beach and the South Bay to West L.A. and the Eastside. Searching through the Off The Record archives, one could come up with a pretty thorough guide of cool shit do do when visiting L.A. Today is no exception. Catch up with the Idaho Falls' Raymond Richards as he plays tour guide in his Rancho Park neighborhood. Look for their excellent new album, The Spark, out next Tuesday (January 26th). Don't miss the mp3s after the jump.

Aquarium Drunkard Show :: A Companion Mix, Vol 2

A mixtape. Some new, some old, some new(ish). This is the second effort to somewhat merge the weekly AD show on XMU with that of the blog proper. After the jump, check a selection of 15 tracks I’ve been spinning over the past few weeks. Simple jams for complicated times, ya'll. Just a small fraction of what I play, but a choice round up nonetheless representative of where my head’s at January 2010. Volume 1 is still fresh; grab it here.

Come Back Jonee :: (Harlem/Devo Cover)

Up until a minute ago this post began with me relating an anecdote about my friend, Adam who, after catching Devo in Brooklyn recently, said something to the effect of "I feel sorry for anyone who only knows Devo through the video for "Whip It." In my mind this was something he had told me, either via phone, email or instant message. In actuality it was one of his fucking Twitter updates. Such . . .

Bobby Charles :: 1938-2010

We lost yet another legend today. Bobby Charles, aged 71, passed away at his home in Abbeville, LA. Charles' music has graced the pages of AD countless times over the years, from his solo work to his contributions to the Band, and most recently his re-appreciation by the Vetiver clan on their 2008 LP become a member or log in.

Next Stop Soweto :: Volume One of Three

Complaining about L.A.'s traffic is about as tired as, well, complaining about L.A.'s traffic. I'm aware. Regardless, last week I found myself on multiple occasions making the east-west commute. For those of you unfamiliar with the layout of Los Angeles, the trek is--at its best--45 minutes up to an hour and a half (and we're only talking about 10-15 miles here). Alas, Babylon.

The bright side: It was an opportunity to genuinely listen to a lot of new music including the upcoming Strut Records release

Elvis Presley :: Unchained Melody (The Final Concert, 1977)

A honey-throated god---mere months away from death---Presley, solo at the piano, performs a spellbinding rendition of "Unchained Melody." Ladies and gentlemen, this was showmanship. A king indeed.

The Strange Boys :: Baby Please Don’t Go (Woe Is You And Me 7″)

Not unlike Harlem, their Austin brethren, the Strange Boys concentrate on rock & roll's primal roots forgoing the bullshit and pretense. It is what it is---refreshing. Their debut album, ...And Girls Club, is still in heavy rotation having first caught their live show a year ago. Now a six-piece (they added Mika Miko's Jenna Thornhill last fall) the band have a new album in the can (Be Brave) and are on tour . . .

The Besnard Lakes Are the Roaring Night :: Albatross

The Besnard Lakes are responsible for one of the best LPs of 2007---the eight track soundscape that is The Besnard Lakes Are the Dark Horse. With "Albatross" (the first single from their forthcoming LP ...Are the Roaring Night), the Montreal group, fronted by husband and wife Jace Lasek and Olga Goreas, continue down the path set out on Dark Horse; one reminiscent of old 4AD: psych-leaning, atmospheric, warm . . .

The Ox-Bow Incident :: Reach Out (I’ll Be There)

A couple of years ago I had Le Switch guest DJ my radio show. The stacks they were pulling from consisted of a lot of old Motown, Stax and Harry Nilsson (and I think even a track off a Ringo Starr solo joint). One band I hadn't heard of was The Ox-Bow Incident, a sixties garage band from Brooklyn, NY named after the 1943 western of the same name. The strength of their . . .

Tom Waits :: April 27, 1979, Paris France, Palace Theater

Before I cool it with the Waits stuff, I thought I'd share this last bit as I've been in a heavy early-late '70s Waits mode for awhile. It's that time of year. What I love about this era is that it just bounces. There is no one doing it quite like this anymore, not even Waits. A great document from a great period, as things would soon change in terms of both . . .

Jerry Jeff Walker :: Driftin’ Way Of Life

It kind of amazes me that nobody seems to know the man behind one of the world's most well-known songs. Not that this is too uncommon, it's just that Jerry Jeff Walker's music is so damn good for the heart it's a mystery why he never became a household name.

Walker wasn't technically native to Texas, hailing from Oneonta, New York, but . . .
