Motown Lost & Found :: Sixties Supremes Rarities

Available today, the always-on-point Hip-O Select imprint have released a two disc compilation of Diana Ross and The Supremes rarities entitled Let The Music Play: Supreme Rarities 1960-1969. Comprised of alternate mixes, scratch vocal tracks, and a number of (then) contemporary covers (Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, Tom Jones, et. al) the set showcases a different side of the . . .

Feist :: The Black Sessions

One more Black Session. Since acquiring this set, recorded for French radio inter a few years back, I've often found myself revisiting it as much, or more, than Feist's official output. And that is not to be read as a knock against the LPs, as it is a testament to the strength of the set. Predominately culled from 2004's become a member or log in.

Retro TV Themes Revisited :: The White Shadow

Retro TV Themes Revisited is an on-going AD feature that aims to mine our long-running collection of past television (aural) glories, cuz they just aren't making them like they used to. Have at it in the comments.

What happens when you take a white pro basketball player, who is forced into early retirement due to an injury, and stick him in the head coach position at a predominantly black high school in South Central L.A.? Why,

Phosphorescent :: The Echo, Los Angeles (Last Nite)

Despite this nagging cold (aka, post-sxsw hangover), last nights sold-out AD Presents show, at the Echo, was the kind of kick in the ass I needed to get me through to the weekend. Casey Dienel (performing solo as White Hinterland) opened the show, before Matthew Houck and company took the stage, bathed in warm feedback, with a looping vocal track repeating "hello Los Angeles, we're become a member or log in.

Lou Reed And John Cale :: Songs for Drella

The enmity between Lou Reed and John Cale is no secret. After Cale’s departure from the Velvet Underground in 1968 (following the release of White Light/White Heat), there was really only one thing that still connected them: Andy Warhol. Seems like that was enough to put a temporary halt to about 20 years of bad feelings, since one of the results of Warhol’s death in 1987 was the tribute . . .

Dusty Springfield :: Breakfast In Bed

Not surprisingly, Cat Power's smoky Black Session (recorded for the French Inter radio) has me reaching for my old copy of Dusty In Memphis; an album that continues to remain fresh, no matter the context, years after its introduction to my library. Hot Freaks, Saturday :: SXSW Re-cap, Final

This will do it for our '08 SXSW coverage - but I wanted to make sure to throw up some photos from Saturday's Hot Freaks party. Highlights included: The Whigs bombastic set on the Mohawk's outside stage (at 1pm), Kevin Barnes covering the Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, and M.I.A.; Frankel's John Cale-like cover of Nick Drake, the rowdy set by L.A.'s Le Switch, and Peelander Z literally

Flat Duo Jets :: Two Headed Cow (Documentary OST)

Just heard about this accompanying soundtrack to the 2006 documentary, Two Headed Cow, about NC's seminal rockabilly outfit Flat Duo Jets. I still have yet to seek out the film, but plan on it, as I have only seen footage of the duo on YouTube, and the excellent '80s Athens scene documentary Inside/Out. Production notes below.

Still one of my favorite films, Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey both turned me on to its accompanying soundtrack, as well as the works of its author, Arthur C. Clarke, who passed away today, at the age of 90, in his adopted home of Sri Lanka. Excerpts below; read the Associated Press obit, here...

Return Trip :: Yo! Bum Rush The Show

The last hip-hop 'movement' I was really into ended in 1994, before I was even twenty years old. With a few exceptions, the last hip-hop album I remember anxiously awaiting its appearance, on retail shelves, was Tribe Called Quest's classic (in any genre) Midnight Marauders; a record I still frequently play today. The Dodos - Friday - Opening Set, Hot Freaks (The Mohawk, Outside Stage)

Thursday night, after the Lou Reed tribute wrapped up, we all had Texas BBQ on the brain which was quickly remedied by Ironworks Barbecue, thankfully, just a ten minute walk away. The line moved surprisingly fast, and a good thing, as we had to hustle in order to make it across town to the
