Built to Spill's sole live album, 2000's Live, achieved what a truly good live album is supposed to do: it excelled in bringing another dimension to the songs, and in the process, improved upon them. No stranger to extreme guitar wrangling, Doug Martsch lets his classic rock loving, freak flag fly, laying waste to Neil Young's epic

Off The Record :: Ben Nichols of Lucero (Memphis)
Off The Record is a recurring, feature here on the Drunkard, that marries two of my greatest interests; music and travel. Having a locals perspective when visiting a new locale is the difference between experiencing it through the lens of a tourist and of that of a native.
Off The Record gathers some of my favorite artists, asks them to reflect on their city of residence, and choose a handful of places they could not live without, be them bookstores, bars, restaurants or vistas.

Neil Young :: Time Fades Away (Vinyl Transfer)
"Heart of Gold put me in the middle of the road. Traveling there soon became a bore so I headed for the ditch." -- Neil Young
The 1973 Live album, Time Fades Away, marks the first LP in Neil Young's early 1970s Ditch Trilogy (see also: On The Beach, Tonight's The Night). Somehow, 30+ years . . .

Phosphorescent :: A Picture Of Our Torn Up Praise
Athens, GA artist, cum Brooklynite, Phosphorescent (Matthew Houck) has a new album, "Pride," coming out -- on his new label Dead Oceans -- October 23rd. New MP3, "A Picture Of Our Torn Up Praise," and album details, via Dead Oceans below:
"On previous albums, he's recruited guest musicians to fill the gaps, but on "Pride", Houck has only enlisted the services of a makeshift choir, otherwise recording every instrument himself. His achingly cerebral delivery recalls Arthur Russell, but . . .

The Raincoats (1979) :: Revisiting
Considering the amount of artists their brief career inspired, and influenced, The Raincoats (1979) debut is an album that criminally goes in and out of print far too often. Rough Trade's 2003 reissue, for example, quickly vanished from record stores years ago, and an Amazon seller presently lists a used copy being . . .

Two Sevens Clash :: 30th Anniversary Edition
"Joseph Hill had a vision of 1977 as a year of judgment -- when two sevens clash -- when past injustices would be avenged. " - Two Sevens Clash (liner notes)
Previously plagued with dubious sound quality, Culture's Two Sevens Clash LP, from 1978, saw its re-release last month via the Shanachie label. Besides . . .

Songs: Illinois' recent fIREHOSE video collection post led me to dig up my favorite tune on the band's second album, if'n. It's hard to believe this song is now twenty years old.

Great World of Sound :: Outtake/Ola Podrida
Heads up, filmmaker Craig Zobel's Great World of Sound will hit theaters mid September in select cities around the country. It's great -- go see it, and find out how music really gets made, a ha ha ha. We had the opportunity to catch a screening this summer at the Los Angeles Film Festival and were as pulled in by the film's humanity as we were the humor, which is no small feat.

Stephen Stills :: Just Roll Tape: April 26th, 1968
As an absolute huge fan of Stephen Stills' late sixties and early seventies output (ever heard Mannasas!?) the news of a, recently unearthed, mass of previously unreleased demos from '68 immediately piqued my curiosity.
While his sometime bandmate/friend/arch-rival, Neil Young, gets most of the critical accolades these days . . .
