Pure X :: Twisted Mirror

Two months left in the year and I've had a mental note to highlight the below track since July. I have McGregor to thank for originally hipping me to this Austin based group a couple of years back, who were (then) known as Pure Ecstasy. The re-christened Pure X is cleaned up, yet no less potent. Culled from their debut long-player, become a member or log in.

Atlas Sound :: Parallax

Clarity. This is the central theme that becomes immediately apparent on Parallax, the third Atlas Sound long-player. Here, Bradford Cox’s distinctive echoed voice is cleaner, more familiar, like he’s hovering right above you. There’s a lot of space between his vocal melodies and the rest of the clamor. It’s a natural phenomenon/progression: artists attempting to move closer to their audience with each subsequent release, shedding the noise, the expectations and the distractions, in an attempt to convey an emotional presence that . . .

Radio Cramps :: The Purple Knif Show

Lux Interior: inter-dimensional, pan-sexual, time-traveling rock & roll alien. And radio host. As Halloween draws nigh we're revving up for our annual airing of The Purple Knif Show, the one-off radio program hosted by Lux in 1984 deep in the bowels of Hollywood. As master of ceremonies, Lux runs through his personal archives spinning the weird ranging from rockabilly and garage to early punk, campy novelty and exotica. His bag of tricks was the best. So go . . .

Happy Halloween :: C.A. Quintet: Trip Thru Hell

One of the most unique, unheralded albums of the 60s, the C.A. Quintet's Trip Thru Hell was a small indie pressing of under 500 from the Candy Floss label, making it a very rare 1968/1969 release. Originals will set you back a pretty penny, but for the die hard may be worth it considering the CD version does not faithfully recreate the back side . . .

Fang :: Diary Of A Mad Werrwoulf

May Aleister Crowley put a curse on the house of Twilight for de-fanging the Lycanthrope. To counter-balance that bullshit, take a listen to Fang's 1983 "Diary Of A Mad Werrwoulf" --   a two and half minute, gnarled, punk howler. Imagine the aural equivalent to the transformation scene in An American Werewolf In London.   Trick or treat.

Neil Young :: Walking To New Orleans

As any casual viewer of David Simon's  Treme  will tell you, it's nearly impossible to define and understand New Orleans and its citizens apart from their music. For years, and particularly since Hurricane Katrina battered the city's levees in August of 2005, the city has been viewed through the funked-out filter of the jazz, early rock, r&b, and hip-hop that has rolled up its bowl and into the wider world. In the storm's immediate aftermath . . .

Lou Reed :: Halloween Parade

A highlight of Lou Reed's 1989 album New York, "Halloween Parade" is as evocative as it is chilling. Through a processional cast of characters the track chronicles the decade's AIDS epidemic and the friends Reed lost to it. Subdued, while the wistful narrative works well enough on its own, it is expertly employed as the glue between the LPs "Romeo Had Juliette" and the Dickensian "Dirty . . .

Hunter S. Thompson :: The Playboy Archives

I picked up Hunter S. Thompson's The Rum Diary upon its '98 release and then kept up with tales of a supposed film adaptation for years afterwards. Bouncing in and out of development and pre-production, by the mid '00s most fans had largely given up any hope of the film coming to fruition. But alas, in 2009 -- apparently defying considerable odds -- filming commenced in Puerto Rico, helmed by director Bruce Robinson, with Johnny Depp once again reprising his role of become a member or log in.

Tom Waits :: Bad As Me

You'd be forgiven for not realizing it had been seven years since the last Tom Waits album of new material. Between the enormous wealth of fantastic, previously unreleased songs on 2006's Orphans boxset and the 2008 Glitter and Doom tour and subsequent live album, it hardly seems like Waits was relaxing exactly. But it's also not the first time that Waits has taken an extended hiatus from releasing new work. There were large gaps between 1987's Franks Wild Years and 1992's Bone Machine and between 1993 . . .
