Baby Huey & the Babysitters :: The Baby Huey Story

There's nearly a full minute of rally calls, shrill screams, throaty howls and blasting horns before Baby Huey insists, “Listen to me / Hear what I say.” When a possessed yawp escalates into the song main a moment later, you are indeed heeding his call. Because that's what this man is--possessed. He's more inviting than the consumed, bed-shackled soul in The Exorcist, but his possession remains just the same: bound within a form, he gyrates, spins, screams and spews . . .

Chris Stamey & Yo La Tengo :: Shapes Of Things

The Yo La Tengo gang hit Los Angeles last week at the El Rey with their Wheel-O-Songs---which fortuitously included a set comprised of tunes via their garage rock alter-egos, Condo Fucks. (That album, by the way, remains a favorite in the YLT ancillary project universe). The band clearly loves a good cover as evidenced on their 2004 collaboration backing up Chris Stamey on his LP

Greater Pacific

Greater Pacific is a new project featuring Kyle Kersten and John Phinney from Travel by Sea and their debut EP, Rainfall, is about the most aptly named record to come out in awhile. Every thing about this EP sounds like a soft rain shower - from the languid percussion, electronic effects, guitar and especially Kersten's voice, a more liquid and less nasal cousin to Dean Wareham of Luna.

It's the pedal steel of Phinney that proves this record's defining instrumental piece, loaning something like the lazy . . .

Dum Dum Girls :: He Gets Me High

Teaming up again with I Will Be producer Richard Gottehrer, plus additional influence from Raveonettes guitar wiz Sune Rose Wagner, He Gets Me High finds Dum Dum Girls blossoming with seismic guitars, chiming harmonies and front woman Dee Dee finding her voice. The . . .

The Chocolate Watchband :: It’s All Over Now Baby Blue

13th Floor Elevators, Van Morrison's Them and San Jose, California's The Chocolate Watch Band. All three came up the other night while discussing favorite renditions of Dylan's "It's All Over Now Baby Blue." Me, I'm tied between The Chocolate Watchband and Them as, really, the two are not all that dissimilar. I . . .

Amanaz :: Khala My Friend

I've been pulling heavily from several Now-Again Records releases from past year on the radio show. I mentioned Witch's Introduction, here, but this related Zambian monster of an LP, Amanaz's Africa, has been getting just as much play. Speaking of Now-Again, they just . . .

The Dirtbombs :: Livin’ For The City

The Dirtbombs new record, Party Store, is a collection of nine covers from the Detroit techno scene of the 1980s--- all done up Dirtbombs style with fuzzed out guitars and attitude. Good stuff to be sure, but more than anything it prompted my revisiting the band's unfuckablewith, second album, become a member or log in.

Ike Turner & The Family Vibes :: Garbage Man

Taken from Confined To Soul, Ike Turner's 1973 record with the Family Vibes (alternately/previously known as the Kings of Rhythm), "Garbage Man" serves as both an example of Turner at his funkiest and, yes, funniest. It's worth a listen for the the clavinet work alone...or, as I so eloquently described it to a friend recently, this shit is just ill

The Human Beinz :: Evolutions

This Youngstown, Ohio band hit pay dirt in 1967 with their version of the Isley Brothers’ classic “Nobody But Me.” The group featured Mel Pachuta (bass guitar), Ting Markulin (rhythm guitar), Mike Tatman (drummer) and Richard Belley (lead guitar). Prior to Evolutions the group had released a split LP with the Mammals and a legit 1967 debut followup titled Nobody But Me.

Most of the Evolutions material was penned by producer Lex De DeAzevedo. While the album is a bit self-indulgent in spots, overall it’s a very . . .

Diane :: The Twin Peaks Tapes of Agent Cooper

Two decades after its network demise, Twin Peaks fervor has once again gripped Los Angeles of late; most recently in the form of this month's In the Trees: Twin Peaks 20th Anniversary Art Exhibition at Clifton's Cafeteria in downtown LA. All manner of the cult show's eccentricities were on hand, from the slavish near-worship of coffee and pie to works by Lynch himself. See the pieces, online,

Spiritualized :: Lazer Guided Melodies / Revisited

Lazer Guided Melodies, the gorgeous debut album from space-rock pioneers Spiritualized, gets a well-deserved reissue. As unflashy and traditional as the packaging looks it still reminds me of the floating ghosts that inhabit each song, and I imagine those centerpieces to be Jason Pierce and Kate Radley as their relationship is the album’s central focus. You can also take comfort in knowing that the . . .

Sevens :: Alex Chilton – My Rival

(Sevens, a recurring feature on Aquarium Drunkard, pays tribute to the art of the individual song.)

There is an understood snarl to much of Alex Chilton's latter work beginning with Big Star's Third/Sister Lovers. While it was certainly detectable on the group's first two LPs, it was in no way so pronounced...so visceral. "My Rival," culled from Chilton's 1979 solo debut, become a member or log in.
