Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea is a the epitome of well crafted modern art - its search for truth and progress takes it through moments both high and low, serious and silly, and comes out all the better for it on the other side . . .

"I wish no public service of any kind." Those were George Carlin's wishes regarding his death. Burial rites and, well, rites of any kind, were exactly the kind of befuddlement that he would--and did--cut down to size with his unapologetic wit. Given the nature of the media and the congregation of the Internet today, publishing obituaries and "in memoriam" montages are a public service of a certain kind, even if that's not how he meant it when he said that in 1990. Even further, in . . .

Released earlier this year, STAX Does The Beatles compiles tracks recorded between 1966-1972 rounding up Beatles cover versions from the Memphis label's creative peak. Essential? Not really, but to no fault of the artists, as covering the Beatles is about as close as one can get to musically tripping over your own feet. Having said that the collection is absolutely an interesting listen for become a member or log in.

Hayden has come a long way from his introduction to the U.S. as the heir to the folky mope-rock throne over a decade ago. His new album, In Field & Town, is instrumentally his most fully realized to date. He sat down earlier this month with Aquarium Drunkard prior to his show at Local 506 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina . . .

This, the reissue of Bubble And Scrape, is the sound of inevitability. Like various '90s indie rock contemporaries before them, the Sebadoh reissues continue to gradually creep out; complete with a healthy dose of extras (15 tracks), which, by now, are practically a reissue prerequisite. Listening with fresh ears - 15 years after its release - I'm struck by, with its various stylistic changes, the . . .

It's hot outside -- L.A. has been in the in the midst of an early summer heat wave, and with much of the city air condition-less we could certainly use some music to match it. Enter Merge Records with their recently released 3 disc Big Dipper anthology, Supercluster chronicling . . .

Listening to Sigur Rî³s has always required stepping out of the real world of traffic jams, smog, headaches, and Salinger novels. The grand, idyllic nature of the Icelanders’ music has always required a suspension of disbelief, a willingness to enter their world, where all of the most precious moments from this side of the looking glass are distilled down to their essence and painted across new lines of latitude and longitude. Over the course of their decade-long career, the group’s world has expanded and become more . . .

Craig Finn is a normal dude. He may be “gettin’ a lot of double takes when he’s comin’ around the corners,” (as he sings on the title track of the Hold Steady’s excellent new record, Stay Positive) but at his core, Craig Finn is a genuinely, refreshingly normal dude. That may explain the enduring and escalating popularity of his band. Unlike the untouchable, self-styled indie rockers that are . . .

(Sevens, a new feature on Aquarium Drunkard, pays tribute to the art of the individual song.)
Let me begin by saying that when the genre of yacht rock is finally sunk forever by the churning ocean of history and good taste, I’ll be one of the last to call SOS. There’s always been something grating about the entire style — two guys; usually mustachioed; playing lite, jazzy, half-rock for the lunchbreak set. And, really, “Reelin’ in the Years” is . . .
