Ike Turner :: 1931-2007

I’ve written a few obituaries and tribute pieces in my day. They’re tough to write. People — family, friends, admirers — have certain expectations. Their expectations are born of nostalgia, and nostalgia is a nasty little thing. In Love in the Time of Cholera, Gabriel Garcia Marquez said, “The heart's memory eliminates the bad and magnifies the good; and thanks to this artifice we manage to endure the burdens of the past.” And that’s the problem when approaching these things; these homages to life, acknowledgments of death. In remembrance, obituaries exalt someone’s contributions . . .

Travel by Sea, Le Switch :: @ The El Rey

If you’re in town or have been dropping by the Drunkard over the last few weeks, then you know about LA Weekly’s Click Hear show Monday night at the El Rey. Clustered with the alt-pub’s Muzika ’07 feature (read LA Weekly’s AD profile here), the show promoted a slew of local bands across four hours. Most notably are two that happen to be regular features here and in the speakers of . . .

Marvin Gaye :: Purple Snowflakes

I really have to make a concerted effort not to listen to this track during the other eleven months of the year. Come December 1st I am on it, and by the time New Years finally rolls around I have usually played it ad nauseam for a month straight. It's just that good.

Season’s Greetings :: Christmas Medley

As far as we're concerned, blog-wise, Big Rock Candy Mountain is the place to be during the month of December. For four years now, every December, the site steadily offers up obscure quality Christmas nuggets you won't hear at the mall or Starbucks.

What's more impressive is the fact that none of the tunes have been repeated since they began their eclectic holiday tradition years ago. The following is a medley of tracks I gathered from the last two years of Big Rock . . .

Kathleen Edwards :: Building 55

It’s 1999. Kathleen Edwards records a seven-song EP entitled Building 55 and presses 500 copies. This EP, now long out of print, is the first recorded output of Edwards’ career prior to her signing with a label and releasing her full length debut, 2003’s Failer. Here are the seven tracks off Building 55 for posterity. Brittle, affecting, alt.country - a glimpse of the sound . . .

Seasons Greeting’s From :: Joni Mitchell

"Its coming on Christmas, they're cutting down trees, they're putting up reindeer, and singing songs of joy and peace. Oh, I wish I had a river to skate away on..."

So sings Joni Mitchell on quite possibly one of the saddest holiday tunes ever recorded to tape. A cornerstone track off her 1971 LP, become a member or log in.
