Hallowed Ground :: Femmes Gothic Country

Long winded Preface: In the audio commentary of the Vanilla Sky DVD, Cameron Crowe makes a statement regarding his choice of using The Beach Boys “Good Vibrations” in the film’s score. In a nutshell, he wanted . . .

Bonnie “Prince” Billy :: Little Lost Blues

As a longtime Will Oldham fan, the 2006 LP, The Letting Go, recorded under his Bonnie "Prince" Billy moniker, quickly rose to the top, becoming one of my favorite albums of that year. What I was unaware of at the time, though, was that a limited number of copies, of the album, came with the bonus collection Little Lost Blues, the third installment in a series of compilations collecting Oldham . . .

Donald Fagen :: The Nightfly

Steely Dan have sparked more heated debates than any other artist I consider myself a loyal, and ardent, fan of. People just love to hate on The Dan. And when I say love, I mean they looove to. And Donald Fagen's solo work? Shee-it, that's just even more bizarre to the non-Dan faithful than the proper canon. Luckily, I could give a fuck.

The beauty of Steely Dan, is that if you get

Animal Collective :: Tickets – Los Angeles (9/18)

Panda Bear's 2007 solo album, Person Pitch, is an A.D. favorite so far this year. This being so, it is no surprise we're digging on his main gig's new LP as well, Animal Collective's Strawberry . . .

Built To Spill :: Cortez The Killer (Cover)

Built to Spill's sole live album, 2000's Live, achieved what a truly good live album is supposed to do: it excelled in bringing another dimension to the songs, and in the process, improved upon them. No stranger to extreme guitar wrangling, Doug Martsch lets his classic rock loving, freak flag fly, laying waste to Neil Young's epic

Off The Record :: Ben Nichols of Lucero (Memphis)

Off The Record is a recurring, feature here on the Drunkard, that marries two of my greatest interests; music and travel. Having a locals perspective when visiting a new locale is the difference between experiencing it through the lens of a tourist and of that of a native.

Off The Record gathers some of my favorite artists, asks them to reflect on their city of residence, and choose a handful of places they could not live without, be them bookstores, bars, restaurants or vistas.

This edition of Off The Record finds us in Ben . . .

Neil Young :: Time Fades Away (Vinyl Transfer)

"Heart of Gold put me in the middle of the road. Traveling there soon became a bore so I headed for the ditch." -- Neil Young

Athens, GA artist, cum Brooklynite, Phosphorescent (Matthew Houck) has a new album, "Pride," coming out -- on his new label Dead Oceans -- October 23rd. New MP3, "A Picture Of Our Torn Up Praise," and album details, via Dead Oceans below:

"On previous albums, he's recruited guest musicians to fill the gaps, but on "Pride", Houck has only enlisted the services of a makeshift choir, otherwise recording every instrument himself. His achingly cerebral delivery recalls Arthur Russell, but . . .
