Mary Weiss :: Shangri-La Style 2007

AD guest post on the return of Shangri-La, Mary Weiss, by fellow Los Angeles blogger, Be The Boy.

Recently the Onion AV Club featured a favorite record of mine, Reigning Sound's Time Bomb High School, as . . .

The Avett Brothers :: Emotionalism

Prior to the March release of Emotionalism I counted myself a casual fan of the Avett Brothers -- this was the record that changed that.

Made up of two actual brothers (Seth Avett and Scott Avett) and a buddy (Bob Crawford), this North Carolina country/bluegrass/indie-folk outfit improve and become more versatile on every album. While I liked their last LP, Four Thieves Gone, Emotionalism is taking there sound to another level entirely.

    Neil Young :: Where The Buffalo Roam

    "I hate to advocate weird chemicals, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone... but they've always worked for me." - Dr. Hunter S. Thompson

    Listen, I'm not here to defend the original feature film based on the writings of Hunter S. Thompson entitled Where The Buffalo Roam (1980)...oh wait, yes I am, but I'll be brief.

    The movie, typically, gets critically panned every time I hear it brought up in conversation; no matter . . .

    The Modern Lovers :: Reissued (U.S.)

    Any discussion regarding albums and artists who were ahead of the game in terms of influencing upcoming musical movements must include The Modern Lovers debut LP. This is the precursor to punk -- absolutely essential listening.

    Recorded in 1972, and released in 1976, the album was wayyy ahead of it’s time, influencing punk, post-punk and new wave. Hell, it even sounds remarkably fresh today.

    Without a doubt The Modern Lovers are the missing piece between the Lou Reed helmed Velvet Underground and The Ramones.

    Cool As Kim Deal :: Title To Come (Revisited)

    The year: 1992 - your host was 16 years old. The album: The Breeders POD. I can draw a line between certain albums in my formative years that connect to many of my listening habits and audio fetishes of today. A major landmark on this aural roadmap is without a doubt The Breeders 1990 debut POD.

    Desmond Dekker :: This Is Desmond Dekker (1969)

    As we mentioned last month, Aquarium Drunkard is excited to have teamed up with the classic reggae/dub label, Trojan Records, to help commemorate the their 40th anniversary. As any genre aficionado will tell you, when it comes to this shit, Trojan is where it's at.

    What this means for A.D. readers - who are reggae/dub . . .

    Microphones :: The Glow, Pt. 2

    Microphones was Phil Elvrum's longtime musical platform, and calling card, prior to changing the name to Mt. Eerie in late 2004. Experimental and lo-fi brilliance.

    Microphones 2001 album The Glow, Pt. 2 has re-occupied my attention the past week, due in part to the time recently spent taking in

    Quentin Tarantino :: A Soundtrack Enthusiast III

    "I've always thought my soundtracks do pretty good, because they're basically professional equivalents of a mix tape I'd make for you at home." -- Quentin Tarantino

    For this weeks Soundtrack Enthusiast we visit the world of filmmaker Quentin Tarantino who, in regard to his choice of music in his growing oeuvre, has been quoted as saying that the music in his films plays as big a role as the actors do in pushing the plot along. Being that Tarantino . . .

    Follow contemporary American roots music? If so you need t get to know AA Bondy, whose debut solo release American Hearts drops next month (Sept 18th) on the Superphonic label. Off The Record :: Josh Ritter (Moscow, ID)

    Off The Record is a recurring, feature here on the Drunkard that will marry two of my greatest interests; music and travel. Having a locals perspective when visiting a new locale is the difference between experiencing it through the lens of a tourist and of that of a native.

    Off The Record gathers some of my favorite artists, asks them to reflect on their city of residence, and choose a handful of places they could not live without, be them bookstores, bars, restaurants or vistas.

    Back in the early '70s Frank Zappa entitled one of his Mothers of Invention albums: Just Another Band From L.A., as a wry and sarcastic wink to the staggering amount of artists coming out of L.A. at the time. The same could easily be said for L.A. in the here and now of 2007.
