The Chrystals :: He Hit Me (It Felt Like A Kiss)

In a recent interview with L.A.'s Le Switch (playing Spaceland October 18th) the band's Aaron Kyle and Maria DeLuca brought up The Crystals ominous, Phil Spector produced/Carole King penned, hit "He Hit Me (It Felt Like A Kiss)." A fantastic song from a bygone era, the tune was expertly covered by become a member or log in.

Aquarium Drunkard Presents :: Dr. Dog

For the uninitiated, Dr. Dog is a Philadelphia based indie outfit playing a variation of reverent sounds culled from the what could be described as the fruits of a a dedicated 1970s vinyl enthusiast's collection. We love it. Along with Richard Swift, Dr. Dog is one of our favorite bands right now making this kind of music -- see the MP3s below for a taste.

Nina Nastasia & Jim White :: You Follow Me

Nina Nastasia & Jim White's collaborative LP, You Follow Me, is one that is made up of night time songs -- languid folk flanked by an experimental, jazzy, backbeat. Clocking in at just a touch over 30 minutes, if you're in the right headspace, the album is just about perfect . . .

Sonic Youth Acoustica :: Boston, MA 2002

August 13th, 2002 Boston, Massachusetts, WERS Radio. Thurston, Lee, and Jim performed acoustic versions of “Empty Page,” “Disconnection Notice” and “Rain on Tin,” before their gig that evening, in support of the Murray Street LP. I was just queuing these up for an upcoming show -- great stuff, download two of the three tracks below.

Howe Gelb/Scout Niblett :: I Want Candy/Medley

If you follow blogs, chances are you have seen, Portland, OR resident, Scout Niblett's name popping up here and there during the past month (or, say, in advertisements -- like the one to the right), and rightly so. I first heard her voice on the duet she did with Howe Gelb a little while back, via the medley "I Want Candy/I Know What Boys Want/Who Do You Love/Not Fade Away." Yeah, it's a mouthful, but . . .

Off The Record :: Division Day (Los Angeles, CA)

Off The Record is a recurring, feature here on the Drunkard, that marries two of my greatest interests; music and travel. Having a locals perspective when visiting a new locale is the difference between experiencing it through the lens of a tourist and of that of a native.

Off The Record gathers some of my favorite artists, asks them to reflect on their city of residence, and choose a handful of places they could not live without, be them bookstores, bars, restaurants or vistas.

This week we catch up with Ryan, from
