Richard Hawley's received a lot of crictical praise this time around, and rightly so. His latest album, Coles Corner, continues where Lowedges left off. How . . .

My Morning Jacket, 2002. I walked out of the Roxy in Los Angeles and told my friend we had just bared witness to a true throwback to the days of the full-on rock show. All long-swinging-face-obscuring-hair, sweat, and denim. Make that double denim. Had I not known better, I would have sworn Cliff Burton was on stage right. You may have heard some of The Pink Mountaintops on the Drunkard radio to the right, but I thought you would appreciate their bio on Better Propanganda. Sounds like a twisted good time.
"The Pink Mountaintops is Stephen McBean, formerly of Jerk With A Bomb and now also exemplar member of Black Mountain. The debut record -- conceived at dawn, while high on a mix of trucker speed and Red Bull, and while sailing down a Colorado highway . . .

Want to mention one of my favorite drummers/percussionists of today. On his solo debut, Stanton Moore, enlists the eclectic help of Charlie Hunter (eight-string guitar) and Skerik (saxophonics, kookification.) What they lay down is far jazzier than any of Moore's past work with his full time gig Galactic. In case you're hesitant, this album . . .

If you haven't heard, the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club is back with a new album...and an entirely different sound. No longer aping The Jesus & Mary Chain, this album is a mostly acoustic affair with tinges of gospel and blues. I listened to become a member or log in.

Part IV of my ongoing 50 states project in which I am marrying my interest in retro travel-postcards with music indigenous to each state. Today we find ourselves in Louisiana, home to one of my favorite cities, New Orleans. Since 1995 I have visited the Crescent city at least once a year -- always drawn back by the medley of music, food, and it's indescribably rich culture. The city is an original . . .

Recorded in 1969 at Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, AL, Pickett was aided by (a then unknown session player) Duane Allman. Allman's nasty guitar at the end of the track was a sign of great things to come. I'm not posting the Beatles original, but I assume most have it committed to memory anyhow.DOWNLOAD:MP3: Wilson Pickett - Hey Jude (beatles cover)
