Sgt Dunbar :: Everything Is, Pt III

Sgt Dunbar's Hobo Banned may be a collective form Albany, NY but their sound is more akin to the strange bouillabaisse that's been brewing in the New Orleans Bywater neighborhood of late: 2 parts continental gypsy, 1 part Balkan folk, a pinch of Swordfishtrombones, with a healthy dash of On Avery Island.

Over the past couple of months I've been spinning

Tropicî¡lia: Ou Panis Et Circenses

Not just another compilation.   Tropicî¡lia, or Tropicalismo, was at once a response to military dictatorship and an attempt to expand Brazilian music by infusing ideas from all parts of the globe, even so far as an attempt to create a 'universal music.' This monumental compilation is the work of a like minded collective - radicals that would subvert and forever change the art and politics of Brazil, specifically Gilberto Gil, become a member or log in.

Decade :: The Microphones,The Glow, Pt. 2 (2001)

What is it that makes us want to deconstruct art by units of time? Lists. We love making them. We love arguing over them. And here, on the verge of a new decade, we’re in a position to do the same again. What were the best albums of the past ten years?

Here at AD, we started talking it through and decided we weren’t going to add to the cacophony of lists being put out by various music pubs. There are enough of those. Rather, we elected to let our four main writers have a chance to write . . .

The Walkmen :: Leonard Cohen, etc.

Our friends at Daytrotter are quite the prolific bunch -- to the point I can't possibly keep up with everything they are doing in real time. But I do make a point to go back and catch up on the sessions I've missed.   Most recently this included the two separate sessions the Walkmen cut while visiting the studio in 2008 -- including a set of covers. The first finds the group become a member or log in.

Sonic Youth :: KCRW 2002/Star Power (Acoustic)

Do you watch Gossip Girl? Me neither, but apparently Sonic Youth do and made a guest appearance on the show last night (you can check out the cameo via Videogum, here). In short, the band play a wedding reception - specifically an acoustic version of "Star Power" (originally off Evol) which you can become a member or log in.

Ola Podrida :: Roomful of Sparrows

On November 10th David Wingo returns with Belly of The Lion -- his second LP recording as Ola Podrida. I've been following Wingo's work since his days scoring David Gordon Green films and Belly is by far his most acomplished work to date. Returning to his native Texas from his adopted home in Brooklyn, Wingo found a new label home   at

Today's Diversions catches up with Foreign Born's Lewis Pesacov (also of Fool's Gold) as he runs down some of his favorite jams from various African locales/eras (with the exception of Pakistan's become a member or log in.

Sonic Youth :: Boston, MA @ WERS ’02 (Acoustic)

Without giving too much away, let's just say you will be reading a lot about Sonic Youth's Murray Street on AD in the near future.   On August 13, 2002, WERS Radio in Boston hosted Thurston, Lee, and Jim as they performed acoustic versions of the first three tracks off Murray Street's side A: “Empty Page,” “Disconnection Notice” and . . .

Warpaint :: Billie Holiday

Self-released earlier this year, Warpaint's Exquisite Corpse EP has been picked up and re-released by L.A.'s Manimal Vinyl.   Say hello to your new favorite late night/early morning go-to album. At five tracks it's a gauzy acoustic/electric affair reminiscent of So Tonight That I Might See era Mazzy Star if, say, fronted by Chan Marshall. This music . . .
