Off The Record :: Avi Buffalo (Long Beach, CA)

Off The Record
is a recurring feature here on the Drunkard that marries two of my greatest interests; music and travel. Having a locals perspective when visiting a new locale is the difference between experiencing it through the lens of a tourist and of that of a native.

Off The Record gathers some of my favorite artists, asks them to reflect on their city of residence, and choose a handful of places they could not live without -- be them bookstores, bars, restaurants or vistas.

Since AD began this series several years ago we have . . .

It’s a good time to be a Bad Seed.   In addition to releasing the critically-acclaimed Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!, Nick Cave has, in the past year, toured relentlessly to rabid crowds, written the score to John . . .

Neko Case :: CBC Radio3 Sessions (Canada)

In 2009 it's anyone's guess which album will "break" an artist. It could be a placement in a viral iPod Nano commercial, a segment during the Olympics, soundtrack placement, or in some rarer cases a consistent output of solid material. The latter is the case with the March release of Neko Case's latest LP, become a member or log in.

Dark Night Of The Soul

Just ran across this piece on NPR's website reporting that the heavily anticipated Danger Mouse/Sparklehorse produced Dark Night Of The Soul compilation may not see an official release due to entanglements with EMI.   Not the first time Danger Mouse has had to deal with the label (see the 2004

The Drones :: River of Tears (Kev Carmody Cover)

Obviously I've been on a bit of a Drones kick of late -- and, really, I'd encourage those reading to do the same.   With five studio albums and a few live releases under their collective belt, the Melbourne, AU based group have been around for the better part of a decade, but as a yank, residing here in California, I admittedly fall into the "recent convert" camp.   As . . .

Jay Bennett :: 1963-2009

At the time of this writing the immediate cause of Jay Bennett's death is yet unknown.   Yesterday, mid-afternoon, rumors of the artist's passing began flying via email, text messages, Twitter, and message boards.   Some speculated that the Bennett in question was in fact a case of mistaken identity -- that of the death of another Jay Bennett, a resident of New York state.   Sadly, by early evening the news was validated - Jay Bennett, solo musician and former become a member or log in.

PJ Harvey :: A Woman A Man Walked By

Even though A Woman A Man Walked By marks only the second album, and the first in 13 years, whose title credits include both the names of PJ Harvey and John Parish, the duo have been collaborating since 1995's To Bring You My Love and as recently as 2007's stellar White Chalk. It's been a lot of fun to hear the results . . .

White Antelope :: The Covers

Recording under the moniker White Antelope, Fleet Foxes principal singer/songwriter Robin Pecknold continues to tackle folk covers on his MySpace page.   Big thanks to Kyle for both the heads up and mp3 rips.   I could listen to an entire album of these (hint, hint).   Fleet Foxes perform at the Sasquatch festival this weekend.
