The Brunettes :: Structure & Cosmetics

I was originally turned on to this New Zealand pop duo, in 2005, by You Ain't No Picasso, and have been keeping tabs on them ever since. This month sees the release of their Sub Pop debut, so expect a bigger stateside splash than the last few albums released on the NZ based Lil' Chief imprint. Sub Pop correctly deems The Brunettes sound as "breezy, effervescent, Shangri-Las-reminiscent pop." OTM.

Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy :: Guilt By Association

Shortly after Friday's Zach Galifianakis/Will Oldham video post, a reader sent over this little gem...it's quite disturbing too. Here, Will Oldham, inhabiting his Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy persona, dutifully covers, a synth styled version of, Mariah Carey's "Can't Take That Away." Consider this fair warning.

If contemporary indie artists covering songs you probably can't stand is your thing, you're in luck. You can find this track, along with various other artists . . .

Black Moth Super Rainbow :: Dandelion Gum

Until last week I knew of Black Moth Super Rainbow only by name. Having now spent the past seven days with their latest LP, Dandelion Gum, I think it is safe to say they more than live up to their 'psychedelic' reputation.

While this shit is most definitely way out there, it is also informed, and reined . . .

Hunter S. Thompson :: The Rum Diary (Film)

It was just announced that Johnny Depp will indeed inhabit the persona, and reprise the role, of his late friend, Dr. Hunter S. Thompson in the upcoming film adaptation of Thompson's first (autobiographical) novel The Rum Diary. Your Drunkard has read . . .

Vic Chesnutt :: North Star Deserter

On a different level, Vic Chesnutt's musical collaborators and co-conspirators, over the past 15 years, are almost as interesting and varied as the southern Gothic bard's lyrical imagery itself. Always one for experimentation, the artist has collaborated with, among others: Van Dyke Parks, Lambchop, Michael Stipe, Will Johnson, Widespread Panic, and Bill Frisell. I could easily go on.

Here, on North Star Deserter, his fourteenth album, Chesnutt . . .

John Vanderslice :: Live – LA River Basin (Thurs)

Calling all John Vanderslice fans. JV and an Aquarium Drunkard would like to cordially invite you out to the LA river basin for a guerrilla-styled free concert. Think: that old U2 video, filmed on the rooftop in downtown LA, where the cops bust it up -- only smaller, and cooler.

Here is scoop: We will all meet up Thursday evening at 7pm in front of the Los Feliz Cafe . . .

Wes Anderson :: A Soundtrack Enthusiast

How many times, so far, have you watched Wes Anderson's The Darjeeling Limited trailer? I think here at the A.D. home offices we are up to around, oh, ten, give or take a few.

Back in 2005 Wes Anderson was the first filmmaker profiled in our (presently on hiatus) series A Soundtrack Enthusiast. For those of you who were not reading back then, we've dusted this one off, and updated it with The Kinks track "This Time Tomorrow"

Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy :: Live w/ Matt Sweeney 6/14/04

"So utterly simple but the most powerful spirit I have ever seen or heard...." - Youtube quote

A huge thank you to the hero who filmed and uploaded this 2004 Will Oldham concert, with Matt Sweeney, to Youtube. All seventy minutes and nineteen seconds of it. This is as close as many of us will ever get to the become a member or log in.

The Yardbirds – Stroll On (From Blow Up – 1966)

Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni's film Blow Up, from 1966, left a lasting impression on me. Its depiction of mod-cool, sixties London, is aesthetically on point throughout its entirety -- and that's not even taking in consideration the actual (murder mystery) plot, which itself is both meandering (in the style of sixties art-house) and engrossing.

Zach Galifianakis & Will Oldham :: Video

Zach Galifianakis & Will Oldham's video of Kanye's "Can't Tell Me Nothing" looks like it could be the bastard child of Oldham's "Cursed Sleep" video from 2006. Let's get weird. (via: Culture Bully

Pink Floyd :: Live @ Pompeii 1971 (Echoes)

History (via Wiki): Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii is a 1972 Adrian Maben film featuring Pink Floyd performing six songs at the ruins of the empty ancient amphitheatre in Pompeii, Italy.

The performances of "Echoes", "A Saucerful of Secrets", and "One of These Days" were filmed from October 4, 1971 to October 7, 1971. The remaining songs were filmed in a Paris studio, along with additional bluescreen footage for insertion into the Pompeii performances. The sequences in Paris . . .
