Liz Durrett :: The One I Love

Rich, from the Atlanta based music blog Cable & Tweed, turned me onto this live R.E.M. tribute compilation last week entitled Finest Worksongs.

The comp consists of the material from the concert of the same name held in Athens, GA at the 40 Watt club last Fall. Artists include: Drive-by Trucker Patterson Hood, Liz Durrett, Five Eight, Modern Skirts, The Observatory, Bain Mattox, Claire Campbell, Tin Cup Prophette. It . . .

Under The Covers :: It’s Expected I’m Gone

I'm not even going to begin to claim one version is "better" than the other. Hells no. I've had the Minutemen original locked in my brain for so many years that upon first hearing Will Oldham and Tortoise's cover . . .

Grinderman :: Self Titled Growling

As mentioned earlier, I was pretty ecstatic when "Get It On" and "No Pussy Blues" surfaced on the Internets earlier in the year. It was as if Nick Cave hopped in a time machine and set the gears for 1982. Super raunchy. Shortly afterwards I received an advance of the LP and have been thoroughly digging since.

The thing about this album, and I discussed this with a friend the other night, is that Grinderman

Tandemoro :: Don’t Judge Me, It’s Christmas

Last December, a few days before catching a flight back east for the holidays, I received a package in the mail from the Tandemoro "Mikes" (Mike Schanzlin & Mike Griffin). In it, was a photo of them sitting a bar, looking appropriately holiday-forlorn, wearing complimentary natty '80s Christmas sweaters, and a CD that said "Merry Christmas from Mike & Mike."

You can now download the EP - plus two additional covers - for free, via their website; here's some details . . .

This one goes out to mister J Reed.

Richard Buckner, aided by backing band Six Parts Seven, made it happen last night at The Echo on Sunset. The artist's trademark warble and heart wrenching lyrics were in full swing as he worked his way through material ranging from 2006's Meadow

Willard Grant Conspiracy :: Exclusive Acoustic

The Wednesday prior to SXSW, Robert Fisher from the Willard Grant Conspiracy stopped by the Aquarium Drunkard show, on Little Radio, for an in depth interview as well as treating us to a few acoustic tracks both on and off the new LP Let It Roll.

David Crosby :: 1970 Session Outtakes

Repost: Back by popular demand -- Crosby's 1970 outakes (aka, Perro tapes)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One of my favorite LP's from the early '70s is David Crosby's underrated masterpiece "If I Could Only Remember My Name?" A fully realized embodiment of the "sound" of California's folk/rock/country/psychedelia movement of the . . .

This demo of "Casimir Pulaski" (the original found on 2005's Illinoise's) hit the Internets a little over a month ago, but it wasn't until last week that I finally gave it a listen. And then I listened five times in a row.

Frankel :: Lullaby For The Passerby

Spring has sprung, and all that jazz, so Frankel's dreamy indie-pop charms are well suited for the weather.

Other than the quality of the music itself, all you really need to know is: Frankel is the nom de plume for L.A.'s Michael Orendy, who plays and produces everything on his new LP Lullaby For The Passerby.

Absolutely an artist to watch out for in 2007.
