Secretly Canadian, Jagjaguwar, (and now with the recent addition of Dean Oceans), have label wise, seen a huge increase in my listening habits the past couple of years. As brief overview, the increasingly eclectic Indiana based label collective have released albums by the likes of: Pink Mountaintops, Catfish Haven, Jens Lekman, Magnolia Electric Co., Songs: Ohia, David Vandervelde, Damien Jurado, and the Danielson Famile -- and that's just to name a handful. An . . .

Back in my Athens days, while attending the University of Georgia, I worked at a little record store in the middle of downtown on Clayton street. Of the many artists/albums I was turned onto via the staff and customers, the one that stands out most in my mind is the classic 1978 Steve Martin stand-up album Let's Get Small . . .

I initially raved about Denmark's Slaraffenland a little over a year ago when the group first released their excellent Jinkatawa ep on the Honningmand label. Comprised of only four songs, Jinkatawa was a clear and concise statement of controlled improvisation and experimentalist art rock.
Earlier this week I opened my mailbox, and to my . . .

The pairing up of music legends with contemporary popular musicians is nothing new, but rarely has it been done so well, and with as much class as the new self-titled Charlie Louvin album. Almost three months into 2007, the Tompkins Square label has quite possibly unleashed the most interesting duets album of the year.
The Louvin Brothers legacy, and the canon they . . .

For crate diggers, hunting down Howard Tate vinyl can be seen as an adventure, a lovable undertaking. For the those looking for the rare, mostly import, Tate compact discs, the process is more akin to an exercise in frustration.
While many of Tate's recordings from the late sixties and seventies have yet to see wide distribution in CD format, a few are available, most notablybecome a member or log in.
Not that it really ever gets cold here in L.A., but yeah, it can get a little nippy from time to time. You know, cold, like, er, 60 degrees cold. A ha ha ha….anyway. A surefire way to warm up, at least around my house, is the Ghana Soundz 2: Afro-Beat Funk & Fusion in 70s compilation. That’s how we do anyway . . .

I've been looking forward to Ben Weaver's upcoming album, Paper Sky, since last spring when I received an unsolicited, unmastered three song sampler in the mail culled from his (then) just recorded sessions with producer Brian Deck. As I wrote last May, Weaver's tunes are a stark reminder of why I try and listen to every CD that . . .

You may have read over the weekend that L.A.'s Arthur magazine has announced that it will be closing its doors, effective immediately, after five prolific years of publication. Since the Drunkard's inception I have written about the magazine (available free locally), and its various offshoots, numerous times and am genuinely sorry to see it go.
Besides the exploration of psych-folk and the surrounding sub-genres, the magazine regularly featured guest contributors including, but not limited to, Thurston Moore

Friday evening, while listening to T. Rex's "Jeepster" on repeat with some friends, something came up about Blur's thinly veiled nod to the tune on the track "I'm Just A Killer For Your Love" off their 1997 self-titled album.
Sounded like a fine idea for a post, what, with the 2003 reissue of T . . .

A.D. -- I first came to know your work through Will Oldham (the Summer In The Southeast tour). How did that come about, and how was the experience? Had you been performing/recording prior to that tour?
P.N. -- the procurement of my services in will's band for the southeast tour was born from a series of frenzied, hard balling, hand wringing negotiations. once he agreed to my terms, fees, per diem and cut of his tour only eps and mini singles i signed on. in turn i gave him some of my back end! hehehe. BUT SERIOUSLY...he liked my brothers
Black Nastys sex raps and asked Black to open for him and thru that he decided he wanted me for his own band as well so i had to pull double doody! i hadn't performed much except for the shawn colvin covers at high school assemblies so it was weird to be playing sold out shows in front of his sweaty, slobbering, erect fans. i pretended that they were there for me sometimes. i think i've been spoiled cuz now when i play for 5 people i kinda wanna kill myself.
A.D. -- You come from a musical family, your two brothers formed The Kevins and one records/produces under the nom de plume Black Nasty. Was music, and the playing of music, a big part of your childhood growing up?
P.N. -- Yes. We had a band called Satans Undercover and we would freestyle all these weird, vibrant, enchanting, visceral, exuberant midwestern pop songs that i like to dip back into when im stuck. i was also a child model but a facial scarring accident involving the neighbors cat made me cut a new path. but the cat and i are cool now and he's a real cool cat.

I was by no means a follower Andrew Bird's past work with the Squirrel Nut Zippers, therefore his 2005 breakthrough album, The Mysterious Production of Eggs, hit me from left field like a love punch.
