Roy Orbison :: An Other-Worldly Voice

The David Lynch post earlier this week fed my Roy Orbison jones, but it is by no means sated. Several months ago I featured a post on Richard Hawley's latest record -- mentioned he is one of the only folks in popular music today doing it in an Orbison-esque (sic) style. I highly recommend Hawley, but first ease . . .

The Replacements :: An Epilogue of Sorts

If you're any kind of fan of The Replacements, be sure to stop by Not Jack Kerouac's blog this morning. He wraps up a nice little "what happened to" piece concerning the band members professional careers after the All Shook Down . . .

Bloodshot Records :: For A Decade of Sin

Bloodshot Records puts out a solid label/roster compilation every few years, and For A Decade of Sin is no exception. I got this My Morning Jacket track off eMusic and plan on downloading the rest of the two discs asap. In the meantime, check out these for a taste.DOWNLOAD:MP3:

David Lynch :: A Soundtrack Enthusiast II

David Lynch: auteur/soundtrack enthusiast/hypnosis pundit. Lynch absolutely transforms the songs he uses in his films into his own. Can anyone really hear "Blue Velvet" without feeling the voyeuristic vibe of the film of the same name? He is expert in juxtaposing a song with a scene of a dissimliar theme. Often copied, never trumped, here are some tracks I have enjoyed over the years used in some of his latter films.

Brendan Benson :: Lapalco (2002)

Prompted by an Amoeba Records clerk, my initial foray into Brendan Benson was 2005's The Alternative To Love album. Like any album worth it's salt, it piqued my curiosity to dealve into Benson's back-catalog. Glad I did, as his previous 2002 album Lapalco is great as well. Also of . . .

Castanets :: First Light’s Freeze

Several months ago I highlighted Castanets debut, Cathedral -- high praise abound, and still a favorite night-time listen. Dig how Ashmatic Kitty describes their new album: "With First Light's Freeze, Castanets return with a dark mutant-country sound infused with strands of free-jazz, new wave and a late-seventies Nashville big-radio strut hijacked by post-punk unravelers. The result is a beautiful mix of somber reflection, destination-unknown travelogue, and subversive anti-war boogie. Castanets' unrelenting creative pioneering delightfully befuddles, as they simultaneously flirt . . .

Born to Run :: 30th Anniversary 3-Disc Set

It's said Bruce Springsteen set out to create the ultimate Rock & Roll album -- and to many of his fans -- Born To Run achieved just that (note: I vastly prefer Darkness On The Edge of Town). This past week marks the 30th anniversary of one of . . .

Page France :: Hello, Dear Wind

Several months ago I got turned on to Page France via various folks on my blog roll to the right. Thanks, gang. But it wasn't until this past month I gave their full-length, Hello, Dear Wind, a proper spin. It's good -- recommended to fans of Neutral Milk Hotel.DOWNLOAD:MP3: Page . . .

Wes Anderson :: A Soundtrack Enthusiast

Some of my favorite films of the past eight years have been the works of Wes Anderson. His impeccable attention to detail draws the audience right into his world and imagination. It's no surprise that I am almost always as eager to hear the soundtrack as to see the actual films. Almost. Here are some tracks spanning his four films thus far, not . . .
