Woods :: Before They Pass By

Rather than existing at odds with the disturbing energy of the pandemic, and the eerie silences that accompanied the quarantine, Woods feel profoundly present. Their balmy psychedelia reckons with the world rather than seeking to escape it. Reflecting on and reasoning with death, they ask, “I see old friends when I sleep…Where do you go when you dream?” In a momentary flash, we see children age and gardens grow . . .

Museum of No Art :: “Minimal Default on a Clear Blue Day”

As Museum of No Art, Germany’s Mona Steinwidder creates sounds that emerge like mirages in a shimmering heatwave. Using a curious palette of samplers, synths, and clarinet, Steinwidder’s compositions float between genre boundaries, neither ambient nor beat-driven but softly pulsating. There is a stateliness to her melodies that recalls the music of Tragedy-era Julia Holter, with a similar use of daydreamy vocals as yet another texture in her patchwork of gurgling arpeggios, bass hums, and echoing horns . . .

The Lagniappe Sessions :: Sven Wunder

... two vibrant, cinematic interpretations of traditional Japanese songs. "Tōryanse," a children's song typically played as crosswalk music, is reimagined here with a Yamasuki Singers-style choir over a lush and propulsive arrangement not dissimilar to the music on Wunder's excellent Wabi Sabi LP. "Sakura," which is customarily performed during Cherry Blossom season, finds the enigmatic maestro going wild on the harpsichord amidst swelling strings, traditional instrumentation and one of his signature breakbeats . . .

Transmissions :: Mossy Kilcher

Lots of records evoke a place. But Mossy Kilcher's 1977 lost folk gem Northwind Calling does more than that: it welcomes the listener into the spirit of her treasured place of origin, Alaska. Born to homesteading parents who'd fled Switzerland during World War II, Mossy was raised near Homer, Alaska, and her beguiling songs are filled with references to the land, paired with field recordings she made there. This week on Transmissions, Mossy joins us to discuss returning to her naturalistic masterpiece more than four decades later . . .

Gong Gong Gong :: Rytme og Drone III

For the third entry in their Rhythm ’n’ Drone series of one-off improvised recordings, Beijing’s Gong Gong Gong assembled with Danish musicians Anton Rothstein (Marching Church) and Angel Wei Bernild (First Hate). While the Chinese avant-rock duo’s instrumentation is typically limited to guitar and bass, this March 2019 session marked their first time playing with a drummer and percussionist. As with many improv jams, the four musicians start slow, patiently becoming acquainted with each other’s approach . . .
