When vocalist Brian Hyland set out to reinvent himself in the late ‘60s, he already had a couple of hit singles to his name, including "Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini," a novelty song he cut at the tender age of 16, and “Sealed With a Kiss,” recorded two years later. But those bubblegum gems don’t really indicate where Hyland would head with his self-titled 1970 record, a remarkable album of soft psych, blue-eyed soul, and power pop.

Let's take a trip to the Bowery, shall we? By the time the Feelies emerged in late 1976, CBGB was already well established as the epicenter of the era’s cutting-edge rock music scene: the reputations of Patti Smith, Television, Talking Heads, and the Ramones were built on its stage in a few short, but action-packed, years. While the Feelies are a part of this lineage (they certainly absorbed lessons from Verlaine and Co.), they've always remained apart from any real scene . . .

John Lennon, who would have turned a cracking 72 next week, cut these five radio promotional spots for Tobias Casual Sportswear, in 1974, while living in L.A. during his 'Lost Weekend'. One wonders - was Nilsson in tow, and if so, was he lingering outside the vocal booth with a frothy pitcher of Brandy Alexanders in hand? Sardonic, mercurial and subversive, these are pure Lennon. Lost weekend, indeed.

Swathed in an impenetrable fog of mystery and extremism, the Japanese group Les Rallizes Dénudés exist more as a myth than as a real band. But what is a real band anyways? Accounts of Rallizes live shows tell of overwhelming sensory experiences fueled by excesses of volume and light — musical performance so intense that the body can’t escape. That sounds real enough, but everything else about the band pulls a blank: no proper studio albums, interviews, press photos — press . . .

If, as our rock ‘n’ roll legends suggest, it’s true that the adult Brian Wilson intended for Smile to be a teenage symphony to God, then it must also be true that Matthew E. White, he all of twenty-nine and very much of our day, has done the same with Big Inner. But where Wilson sought the sublime in cooed harmonies and American history, White, who was born in the Philippines and . . .

The fundamental texture of Melody Prochet’s voice rings clean and delicate–an anti-diva, expressive in her elegant range and unwavering accuracy. The echo applied to her voice is pillowy, a cumulus cloud damply evaporating up into a bright sun. Set in a flurry of zip zappy synth sounds, Melody’s Echo Chamber sounds dreamy, but it’s more atmospheric than psychedelic: The feeling is like being lost in an overwhelmingly vivid daydream, not like you're tripping balls.

Montreal’s Canailles first got together in the summer of 2010, working out traditional québécois and Cajun songs among the green shadows of Parc LaFontaine. Two years later, they’re one of the city’s greatest francophone groups, and one of the few to cross over into anglophone territory: In addition to this year’s SXSW, the group played four raucous shows at notorious Lafayette, LA, nightspot the Blue Moon Saloon this spring, and they regularly prime crowds across anglophone eastern Canada.
Though they sing in French, their charm . . .
