Cazumbi :: African Sixties Garage, Vol. 1

Considering the vast size and scope of the continent it's fair to say I listen to, write about, and feature a disproportionate amount of sixties and seventies afro-beat/Soweto/what-have-you on these pages. No apologies, as there have been a formidable amount of incredibly creative and interesting reissues and compilations of late, especially ramping  up six or so years ago. Having said that, here is something from the continent of a different stripe: volume one of the become a member or log in.

AD Presents :: Peelander Z, Halloween Show – October 29th

We're doing our Halloween party this year, on October 29th, with Japan's favorite exiles, Peelander Z---which makes perfect sense for the occasion if you have seen this band live.   At the Grandstar in Chinatown. We had them play on two consecutive Hot Freaks bills, at SXSW, and they take it beyond thunderdome (see video after the jump). You really don't want to miss this. As always, free Vodka from 8-10pm, DJs, etc.   Also on the bill: Brothers Collateral and our friends Sir Weston. Admission is eight dollars if you wear a costume.

We're giving away five pairs of tickets. Hit us up in the comments with your name and email (in the address field) to enter. Tickets held at the door available night of show.

The Corin Tucker Band :: 1,000 Years

When Sleater-Kinney called it quits (or went on hiatus, depending on your stories) in 2006, it was on the heels of their finest moment - a riotous, gargantuan sounding record called The Woods. The band had been making slight alterations to its unique sound for the previous four albums and what turned out to be their swan song became their biggest stylistic leap . . .

South San Gabriel :: All Night Long (Lionel Ritchie)

Denton, TX's Centro-matic/South San Gabriel quietly release, and tour, their records in relative obscurity. As a longtime fan I've noticed diminished returns in not the quality of their work, but in the attendance of their shows and general reception to their output. A shame, too, as Will Johnson and Co. continue to impress for those keeping up. Their latest, the seven song EP, become a member or log in.

David Bowie :: Station To Station (Reissue)

Versatility: a trait that when forced, more often than not, suffers from feeling exactly that way. Historically this is an issue David Bowie has avoided for the most part---especially during his 70s peak. Unlike a number of the artist's contemporaries, Bowie has, rather effortlessly, traversed the ins and outs of various trends, fashions, and genres over the past four decades. Very few artists can straddle both the uber-mainstream that is American classic-rock radio and the icy proto-punk landscapes explored with Brian Eno just a few short years later. But Bowie did, and did . . .

L’Aventure :: Television’s Adventure Reimagined

If you missed this in June.... Last year Aquarium Drunkard released RAM On L.A. -- a local music compilation featuring eleven Los Angeles artists each covering a track off Paul McCartney's 1971 LP, RAM. Today we're following that up with L'Aventure -- a local music compilation featuring eight Los Angeles artists paying tribute to Television's sophomore LP, Adventure.

Like its predecessor, L'Aventure is an attempt to capture, if only for an instant, a slice of what is happening musically in L.A. in 2010. Or more specifically, it's an attempt to highlight eight Los Angeles artists that have, individually, caught my ear over the past couple of years. By no means all encompassing, L'Aventure is a great jumping off point for those interested in the diverse landscape that is L.A.'s music.

Why Adventure? Why now? Like RAM, the album is used as a template---as a cohesive force---bonding these, at times, disparate artists together. A post-punk landmark, Television's debut, Marquee Moon, tends to garner most of the adulation. It's follow-up, Adventure, is now a classic album in its own right that seems to regularly get lost on the mix. In short, it is time for a reevaluation---perhaps this is the beginning of that conversation.

Available as a free high-quality download (FLAC and/or 320kbs mp3), we are encouraging those who have the means to donate to the Los Angeles based Silverlake Conservatory of Music. 100% of all donations go directly to the conservatory. Huge thanks to the artists who generously donated both their time and talents to this project. Artwork by Jeremy Benson, layout by Ben Kramer.

Lee Moses :: Time And Place

As I mentioned last month, that early 70s Tony Owens collection I discovered in June inspired me to pull from the old soul and r&b stacks a bit more than usual. So, thanks Tony. As such, a good number of these records have been working there way more frequently into my standing, weekly, DJ gig at a little cantina here in Silver Lake; in particular Lee Moses become a member or log in.

Ike & Tina Turner :: I Idolize You

Heading east on Santa Monica Blvd, just after the Blues Explosion's set last night at the Troubadour, the conversation turned towards all things Jon Spencer related (it was that kind of show). Naturally the discussion landed on Spencer's 90s collaboration with his wife, Christina Martinez, Boss Hog. The band's self-titled, major label, debut has a number of high points including their . . .

R.L. Burnside :: Going Down South (C. 1970, Mississippi)

Musically, a late bloomer (outside of his native Mississippi), little footage and/or recordings exist of R.L. Burnside prior to his 'discovery' via the folks at Fat Possum Records in the early 90s. The above video is culled from the "You See Me Laughin'" documentary that highlighted the Mississippi delta & hill country blues players the label showcased prior to their current focus on skinny white dude music. For those interested in the region's . . .
