Off The Record :: Robyn Hitchcock (NY, NY)

Off The Record is a recurring feature here on the Drunkard that marries two of my greatest interests; music and travel. Having a locals perspective when visiting a new locale is the difference between experiencing it through the lens of a tourist and of that of a native.

Off The Record gathers some of my favorite artists, asks them to reflect on their city of residence, and choose a handful of places they could not live without -- be them bookstores, bars, restaurants or vistas.

A.C. Newman :: Get Guilty

There's a certain inherent risk in being both a solo artist and a member of a group. Especially if you start releasing solo albums almost as regularly as your band does. Though, realistically, no one necessarily expects a solo record to surpass a band's output.

But that changes if you're A.C. Newman. Since the bulk of the New Pornographers songs are written by Newman, any solo record would be ripe for comparison. His first,

Animal Collective :: Merriweather Post Pavilion

Though you would never guess it by the groaning foam of their music, Animal Collective are huge fans of simplicity. Over the course of nine years, they've built a career on small, gravelly desires: chores, summertime, domestic life. These are not the things your typical experimental pop groups sing about, and Merriweather Post Pavilion is no exception to their rule . . .

Imaad Wasif w/ Two Part Beast :: Strange Hexes

Alaska! aside, the last time I wrote about Imaad Wasif was just prior to the release of his 2006, self-titled, solo debut. Released on Kill Rock Stars, the LP's press bio offered the following caveat: “(the album) is meant . . .

Sevens :: What Do You Want the Girl to Do?

(Sevens, a recurring feature on Aquarium Drunkard, pays tribute to the art of the individual song.)

Masterful songwriting often leads to reinvention. Sometimes a song so is so approachable, so adaptable, that to cover it almost feels like a duty. At their best, these interpretations have the ability to transcend just being a cover, but act as a new entry into the song's lineage.

The Rosebuds :: The AD Interview

It's always interesting to see a band work outside of the realm of the traditional three or four piece set. North Carolina's The Rosebuds have been functioning as a two-person outfit since the release of their 2003 debut, Make Out. Though they hire additional players for the studio and subsequent tours, the band's albums, including their fourth full . . .

Fleet Foxes :: Den Haag, Netherlands 11.21.08

By January 1st it was readily apparent that Fleet Foxes' debut had pretty much landed on the majority of Best of '08 lists - both on and offline (including our #1 slot). Selling out larger venues every time they route through town, the group is now poised to perform on Saturday Night Live this weekend. Tune in. In the meantime check out the following (pristine) show, recorded last November in Den Haag, Netherlands. Big tip of the hat to the original taper.

Bob Dylan/Malkmus :: Can’t Leave Her Behind

An AD reader recently reminded me of this great clip from 1966 of Dylan playing "Can't Leave Her Behind", filmed in a Glasgow hotel room with Robbie Robertson while on tour in the UK. While the general consensus among the Dylan faithful is that the following is the only known recording of the tune (and a fragment at that), I can't help but wonder if somewhere in Dylan's archives a rough demo doesn't exist, just waiting for an eventual, future, "bootleg series" release. One can always hope. While just a fragment, this is arguably . . .

The Faces :: Jealous Guy (Outtake/Long Player)

Sure, John Lennon's original is precious in its own right, but as I've stated on these pages in the past, for me the definitive version of "Jealous Guy" is the soul-drenched Donny Hathaway cover off his very much essential 1972 live album. Note: If you've not made that album a part of your life, you may wanna close this page right now and get on it . . .
