Off The Record :: Eef Barzelay (Nashville, TN)

Off The Record is a recurring feature here on the Drunkard that will marry two of my greatest interests; music and travel. Having a locals perspective when visiting a new locale is the difference between experiencing it through the lens of a tourist and of that of a native.

Off The Record gathers some of my favorite artists, asks them to reflect on their city of residence, and choose a handful of places they could not live without, be them bookstores, bars, restaurants or vistas.

Today we visit Nashville, TN with, former principal songwriter . . .

The New Pornographers :: Myriad Harbor

Although it does not officially drop until late August, the New Pornographers fourth LP, Challengers, has been a pretty constant jam around these parts the past few weeks. If your into indie-pop, you are most definitely already a rabid New Pornos fan, if not, well, you might want to get on that. Like, quick.

Over the past six weeks Matador has released a couple of tracks off

To The Sad, Sad Truth, The Dirty Lowdown

It's hard to express how much I really like this funky little '70s pop song. Even before the iPod and MP3 players were all the rage, I would throw this track on mix CDs and listen to it on my portable player with headphones. I particularly remember one such occasion, years ago, running through LAX in a desperate attempt to catch a flight while this Boz Scaggs tune provided the soundtrack. I missed it.

St. Vincent :: Marry Me (July 10th)

Without a doubt, St. Vincent's solo performance at Largo, this past May, stands as my favorite show thus far in 2007. Certainly high praise when you consider it was just Vincent (Annie Clark), her guitar, a kick drum, and piano.

That modest combination proved to be amazing -- prompting us to say this the day after: "In a word, her performance was breathtaking. Deftly moving from confessional singer-songwriter fare on the piano, to displaying avante-guard . . .

Aquarium Drunkard Presents :: Howlin’ Rain (Sat.)

I've got three pairs of tickets to go see the Howlin' Rain show on Saturday night at The Echo here on the Eastside. I really love these guys -- it's like a 21st century '70s rock band, but, you know...now. If you have seen these guys before, than you know the band is going to summon some fierce rock & roll jams. Spoon :: Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga

One of the more consistent bands working today, Austin's Spoon are back with Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. Like the last three Spoon albums, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga works the Anglophile-cum-Texas angle to near perfection with Britt Daniel's vocals and guitar front and center. If you're an existing fan of

Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra :: Security

Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestras: Super bad Brooklyn based funk group carries the afro-beat torch originally lit decades ago by one Fela Kuti. The correlation between the summers rising temperature, and the increased play of the collectives latest LP, Security, is no random coincidence. This is truly heat music.
