Kathleen Edwards :: Asking For Flowers

If you somehow manage to avoid the sophomore slump in music, all eyes immediately shift to see if there's the junior jinx. Kathleen Edwards avoided that slump by creating a more nuanced and textured version of her debut with Back to Me in 2005, but you can only reshuffle the same deck so many times. Her third album, Asking for Flowers, plays down the rockier elements of her first two albums in favor of a more maudlin, less insular set of songs that add up to a tremendous album, even . . .

Malkmus :: Real Emotional Trash

God bless the "event album." Each year I can (usually) look forward to a few of these by some of my favorite artists. Even now, in the era of instant-everything, a new album, from someone whose work I have been following for years, instills a sense of anticipation and urgency. Stephen Malkmus is one such artist.

Grieving Angel (or, What Happened to alt.Country)

"I saw the writing on the wall, with the Americana movement...I started to see country-western reproduction shirts at the Gap, and once something gets that big, it's over." - Darin Wald, Big Ditch Road.

"Do you mean Gram Parsons is dead?" - Larry Oster-Burg (Michael Shannon), Grand Theft Parsons

Historical periods, art movements, ice ages; you're never really sure when one begins or ends. Art especially, with its constant action/reaction sequences, is vaguely defined from one movement to the next. We do tend to agree, however, that there is a start . . .

Off The Record :: Richard Swift (Eugene, OR)

Off The Record is a recurring feature, here on the Drunkard, that marries two of my greatest interests; music and travel. Having a locals perspective when visiting a new locale is the difference between experiencing it through the lens of a tourist and of that of a native.

Off The Record gathers some of my favorite artists, asks them to reflect on their city of residence, and choose a handful of places they could not live without, be them bookstores, bars, restaurants or vistas.

This week's edition of Off The Record finds us . . .

Noise Pop ’08 :: The Broken West/Walkmen

Drove up to San Francisco yesterday, immediately following White Denim's performance on my Little Radio show (do see them live), and arrived in the city about 10:15. Got to The Independent for the Broken West/Walkmen show, just as The Walkmen were taking the stage. That boy can play the drums (see above video).

J. Tillman :: Vacilando Territory Blues

The new Aquarium Drunkard/Autumn Tone HQ is now located in downtown L.A., on the office side of Little Radio's operations, aptly entitled, SPACES. Being that it is a converted warehouse, the digs can get (yes, even in Los Angeles) chilly from time to time, but that's where J. Tillman's upcoming album, Vacilando Territory Blues, comes in. And note that I use "upcoming" in the most . . .

Badfinger :: A Rule of Thumb?

As a rule of thumb, I tend to avoid most greatest hits packages. The logic behind this being that if one's career is such that it **genuinely warrants a "hits" retrospective, than there is most likely a solid record, or three, to peruse on their own. But like any rule, there are exceptions. Reading Duke's recent post on Badfinger reminded me of this, as I only own the single disc, incredibly solid, collection

Howlin’ Rain :: The Magnificent Fiend

"Howlin' Rain make music to beat the steering wheel of your van to, or sing along with while drinking whiskey in the bathtub, on a Saturday night, with your dog." -- Ethan Miller (Howlin' Rain)

Yeahhh, bring on the rock show. The above quote was taken from the initial Birdman Records press sheet, upon the release of Howlin' Rain's 2006 become a member or log in.

Piano Players Rarely Ever Play Together (1982)

Big kudos to the folks at Cinefamily, who have taken over L.A.'s Silent Movie Theater, bringing a tasteful, eclectic batch of films, of every genre and era, to the city. Last night I checked out their screening of Piano Players Rarely Ever Play Together, which documents three generations of New Orleans piano legends coming together for the first time (Tuts Washington,
