Super group or side project: different sets of expectations accompany either term. The super group is always hoped to be something akin to the sum of its parts and rarely meets them. The side project is often assumed to be tossed off and spur of the moment, so if they end up being fantastic, it's a great surprise. So what to expect from something that can easily invite both terms? Let's give it a shot.

Pop nirvana. Let's first take a moment and all give a collective high five to Yep Roc for reissuing Lowe's 1978 debut, as it had been out-of-print for years (they nail the packaging too, so you can toss that 4th generation, burnt, CD-R in your closet).
I'm pretty sure I am not alone when I say that I was originally recommended this gem (known in the U.S. as become a member or log in.
Capturing truly unique performances, our friends at La Blogotheque have been working overtime, this year, since expanding their operations stateside. Now with a West coast base, the Take Away Shows have been moving up and down the coast filming some of our favorite artists in (their trademark), non traditional settings. While you can literally spend hours perusing the archives (and, we have), we wanted to specifically point out the recent addition to become a member or log in.
Last week while in San Francisco, knowing my interest in obscure sixties/seventies psych-rock, Dodge hooked me up with a copy of this recent Bully Records compilation for the ride home to L.A. Comprised of fifteen tracks, the set boasts varied international genre exercises (Indian, Brazilian, Peruvian, Turkish, Argentinian and Uruguayan) ranging from psych, garage-rock, poly-rhymic fusion, and beyond. Yesterday, AD received an advance of the upcoming Breeders LP, Mountain Battles. Having only spun it once, all the way through, it (so far) sounds like a good'un. Looking forward to repeated listens, not to mention their SXSW performance next week in Austin. Album drops April 8th - check out the first single, "Bang On," below.

Every band has 'em - the red-headed stepchild of an album. It may work real hard in school, make good grades, help old ladies across the street, but the fact remains that there's somethin' peculiar that sticks out about it. And things just never go its way as a result. Thus, The Hot Rock.
Released on the heels of their career making Dig Me Out, the album that would haunt them stylistically until they blew it all away with their swan-song, The Woods, The Hot Rock is a troublesome, dark and thoughtful album. Gone are the out-and-out flailing maelstroms of riot-grrl power pop like "Dig Me Out" and "Words and Guitar." In their stead, well..it depends.
On the one hand, The Hot Rock doesn't stray that far from Sleater-Kinney's earlier albums - think a better produced Call the Doctor. "Living in Exile," "Burn Don't Freeze," "Memorize Your Lines" and "One Song For You" all have the sparse, almost awkwardly picked lead lines that had become the band's stock in trade by this point. I'll mention (for those who have forgotten or didn't know in the first place) that Sleater-Kinney crafted their sound without a bass player - just Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein's guitars. Where this enabled the band to have a unique sound from the beginning, it was already starting to paint the band into a corner. Subsequent albums would see them striking out in different directions and flailing a bit in each try, ultimately nailing it on The Woods. But here the band's spartan sound is still a novelty if not a genuine asset.
