Bon Iver :: For Emma, Forever Ago

Evelyn You Know My Heart’s With You…

After a considerable silence, there has been a lot of My Morning Jacket news so far in 2008. First and foremost, details were revealed about the bands next album (it's been awhile too, as Z came out in the Fall of 2005) that is presently being recorded and set for a June 10th release date. Immediately following, MMJ are scheduled to perform . . .

Drive-By Truckers :: Brighter Than Creation’s Dark

Drugs, desperation, suicide, Alabama-born bed-time stories, and quirky southern character studies -- a little bit country and a whole lot of rock 'n roll. In other words, a Drive-By Truckers album. Tomorrow, the Truckers will release their seventh LP, Brighter Than Creation's Dark, the first DBT album since the departure of guitarist/songwriter Jason Isbell (who came on board . . .

The Meters :: Live NYC @ The Bottomline 1977

I acquired this 1977 Meters show in 2000 along with the Showboat Lounge show that was posted earlier in the week. At the time -- and this still may be the case -- locating quality live documents from the band’s heyday was no small feat.Actually, until a few years ago, even locating copies of their studio albums was an Indiana Jones like undertaking, be it CD or vinyl. Now most decent record stores have the catalog on compact disc, and the better vinyl shops have the original reissues on hand. What I’m getting at is: if you’re not already, it’s a great time to become a Meters fan.

The below show was recorded in 1977 at NYC's The Bottomline, and it’s some deep New Orleans funk & soul. And I do mean funk, this shit is greasy -- gets right under your fingernails funky. Humid, hot, sticky grooves. If you downloaded The Meters Live at The Showboat Lounge, I would venture to say this show is a tad bit better. And, if you didn't, you best get on it.

Before Uncle Tupelo :: The Primitives (1985)

I'm not sure what I like better about this video; it's clearly a toss up between the guy, covered in fake blood, flailing around on the stage, or Jeff Tweedy, on bass, wearing a dress. I'm gonna have to go with Tweedy in a dress. Ole Jay Farrar looks about the same.

Off The Record :: Patterson Hood (Athens, GA)

Off The Record is a recurring, feature here on the Drunkard, that marries two of my greatest interests; music and travel. Having a locals perspective when visiting a new locale is the difference between experiencing it through the lens of a tourist and of that of a native.

Off The Record gathers some of my favorite artists, asks them to reflect on their city of residence, and choose a handful of places they could not live without, be them bookstores, bars, restaurants or vistas.

Casey Dienel, one of our favorite discoveries of the past couple of years, returns this March, via her new home at the Dead Oceans label, fronting her newly christened group, White Hinterland. Chris at Gorilla vs Bear premiered the first single "Dreaming of The Plum Tree," this morning off the forthcoming Phylactery Factory . . .

Mark Kozelek :: What’s Next To The Moon

With all this talk of Sun Kil Moon's forthcoming album, April, set to release in a little over two months, we spent part of last weekend re-ingesting a few albums from Mark Kozelek's existing catalog, including one of our favorites, 2001's become a member or log in.

Barton Carroll :: Pretty Girls & Brooklyn Girls

There is always a dearth of new music the last couple of months of the year, so when January finally hits, and the new releases do start rolling out, it's both welcome and, depending of the quality of the release schedule, and the amount, even formidable. Thus far in early '08 we have seen many a fine LP cross our desk, and they just keep coming. One title I want to highlight, based on the strength of his become a member or log in.

The Meters :: Live @ The Showboat Lounge, 1977

In continuing with the string of New Orleans related posts leading up to Mardi Gras, here is a Meters show from 1977 I've posted on the Drunkard the past two January's. Call it tradition. Look for another Meters live set in the next week recorded at The Bottomline (NYC) in the late seventies.

Nobody..and I mean nobody funked it up like The Meters did in their prime. Shit-hot grooves. I have collected a number of shows from the band’s ’70s hey-day, and this is one of my favorites. It is culled from a 1977 New Orleans Live radio broadcast complete with a smokey-voiced DJ popping in and out during the duration of the show.

Great banter from the band too. Several times throughout the show Art Neville speaks directly to the greater New Orleans radio audience, telling them to get with it and come on down to the show. The beginning of “People Say” is particularly nasty.
