Surf Trax ’64 – ’74 :: Chairman of The Board

Released last week on the UK based Harmless Records, this import compilation gathers up 18 tracks originally featured on Surf movie soundtracks during the '60s and '70s. Comprised mainly of garage and psychedelia, the comp is pure surf kitsch from the days of long boards and longer beards.

XTC :: Mayor Of Simpleton (1989)

A couple of weeks ago Chris at Gorilla vs. Bear turned me onto the mid-eighties psychedelic XTC spinoff group, The Dukes of Stratosphear. While I'd heard a number of Andy Partridge side-project related material over the years, this particular incarnation was news to me.

The Blakes :: Sign To Light In The Attic Records

Seattle garage rock outfit, The Blakes, are now on board with the ever increasingly cool Light In The Attic Records. As mokb recently mentioned, this is a band KEXP has been touting for some time now, and for good reason. This wider distro is great for both the band, and those of us who live outside the northwest and want to hear their . . .

Rolling Stones :: Waiting On A Friend (Video 1981)

When it comes to classic and essential Rolling Stones albums, 1981's Tattoo You (while not bad) doesn't immediately spring to mind, but it was without a doubt the best Stones album of the '80s.

Comprised of almost entirely '70s sessions outtakes, the LP contains a few must-have tracks, including the Goats Head Soup outtake "Waiting On A Friend." Recorded in Kingston, Jamaica at Dynamic Sound in 1972, "Waiting On A Friend" was scrapped (not . . .

Love Is Strange :: Wings (1971)

(Sir) Paul McCartney played a 'secret' show here in L.A. on Wednesday at Amoeba on Sunset. Secret is a bit of a misnomer as the sidewalks were jammed with people waiting in line for wristbands days in advance. This in-store was of course part of the promotional blitz supporting Macca's new album become a member or log in.

Stephen Malkmus :: (Nine Unreleased) Live Jams

A big thank you to Matt Picasso for originally sharing these unreleased, live Malkmus tracks (and then later re-hooking me up after I promptly lost them.) The sound quality on these is fantastic.

The following nine tracks are culled from The Jicks January 20th gig in Portland during this past winter's tour. I was at the tours kickoff show atbecome a member or log in.

Drive-By Truckers Talk Two New Albums…

Never one to shy away from Drive-By Truckers related news, here is a heads up for all you DBT fans that have yet to check out this new PASTE magazine feature published online a few days ago. Sounds like good news for Cooley fans; also of note is the mention of the Truckers working with badass Blues mama Betty Lavette -- See become a member or log in.

Jimmy Smith :: Root Down (And Get It)

Jimmy Smith's 1972 Live LP Root Down is greasy, nasty and funky all the way. Recorded with his band live in Los Angeles, the occasion proved to be a watershed moment for soul/jazz/fusion. Having revolutionized the Hammond B3 and the way it's played, this LP single-handedly sent me out seeking similar genre . . .

Bad Brains :: Build A Nation

Years ago I owned a cassette that was a home-made Bad Brains reggae compilation. Now, after listening to the reggae cuts on the new, Adam Yauch produced, Bad Brains album Build A Nation, I wish I still had it. While I, for the most part, grew out of . . .

Magnolia Electric Co. :: Sojourner Box Set

Have you seen Magnolia Electric Co. live lately? The band opened up for Son Volt here in L.A. at the El Rey a couple of months ago and, in my opinion, completely stole the show. It was at this show I first heard the news of the upcoming 4 CD/DVD Sojourner Box Set which is seeing a limited (5,000 copies) release via Secretly Canadian on August 7th. Check out the details below via the label. It looks . . .

The Beastie Boys (2007) :: Patti Smith (1976)

The above photo is of the Beastie Boys old G-Son Studio located about a mile east of me in Atwater Village. It has nothing to do with The Mix-Up, but it is here that they recorded many a jam in the '90s before heading back east to NYC.

Silver Jew :: The Movie

As previously reported Dave Berman and his Joos are the subject of director Michael Tully's documentary following the band on their tour throughout Israel last summer.

Earlier last week, I had the opportunity to watch a screener of the film and am happy to report Berman appears to be in both good health and in good spirits, having recently rediscovered religion (as well as having buried some old demons.) This doc is a must see for . . .
