Goose Creek Symphony :: Established 1970

I spent the past four nights in nyc. Returning to my friends pad Thursday night, post bars, he surprised me by throwing on a wonderfully aged vinyl copy of Goose Creek Symphony's LP Established 1970. The juxtaposition of this rural music framed by Chinatown, wafting up from a few stories below, made for an interesting cross-cultural mix.

Track A Tiger :: We Moved Like Ghosts

Track a Tiger's debut release, Woke Up Early The Day I Died, was one of Aquarium Drunkards favorite albums of 2006 -- if you're not familiar, you can download a couple of tracks off the album below.

Last month the group released their follow up, We Moved Like . . .

Mike Nesmith :: And The Hits Just Keep On Comin’

Oh yes, it's that Mike Nesmith...the one from The Monkees...the one who always moved to the beat of a different drum. After the sixties television sensation ended, Nesmith went on to follow his muse which took him back, stylistically, to his Texas roots. The result were a number of under-the-radar country rock gems that come highly recommended to fans of the '70s California country rock that permeated the canyons of that era.

Loudon Wainwright III :: Soundtracking

It's safe to say Judd Apatow's new film, Knocked Up, is most definitely one of the funniest mainstream flicks I have seen this year. Highly, highly recommended. Also recommended is Drunkard favorite Loudon Wainwrights III's contributions to the film's soundtrack; the tracks "Grey In L.A." and "Daughter," both of which roll during the end credits and can be found . . .

Nick Drake :: The Family Tree Collection

Pre-dating Drakes debut, Five Leaves Left, this new posthumous collection, entitled Family Tree, gathers up laid back recordings culled from both Drake originals as well as covers. A few of these (from what I have witnessed personally) have been around previously via unsanctioned bootlegs . . .

Ben Nichols (Lucero) :: Dog Day Night

Earlier last week AD friend, and fellow Lucero enthusiast, Muzzle of Bees, turned us on to the new Ben Nichols track "Dog Day Night" off of the new Thick Syrup Records Arkansas Compilation. The track has a fantastically rough Mississippi Delta vibe to it expertly anchored by Nichols trademark growl and sparse, nasty back porch electric blues guitar.

Yeasayer :: Via Brooklyn

Last week, while on vacation, I was recommended Yeasayer with a caveat along the lines of 'imagine TV By Radio if fronted by Genesis era Peter Gabriel.' Sold. Having no official release, the MP3s found on Yeasayer's MySpace page accompanied me, along with Cormac McCarthy's grim novel The . . .

Cal Tjader :: Soul Sauce (1964)

I loaned my vinyl copy of Cal Tjader's album Soul Sauce to a friend a few weeks ago and since then I have seen/heard it seemingly everywhere (including one of my SIRIUS shows). Must be the Tjader collective consciousness at work. You know how he do.

The vinyl copy I own was originally my fathers from his college days. I randomly stumbled upon it while in high school and was . . .
