SXSW :: Steve Earle (Friday Night)

According to the Austin grapevine, Steve Earle flew in strictly for the single solo show he did at The Parish Room Friday evening before heading back to NYC to continue working on his upcoming album. Thank you, Steve Earle.

Armed with only an acoustic guitar, Earle discreetly took the stage at the packed New West showcase, and with a single strum of his guitar quieted the at-capacity crowd. The obvious . . .

SXSW :: Bishop Allen (Thurs/Friday)

One of the many bands I had been looking forward to seeing in Austin was Brooklyn's uber-prolific Bishop Allen. As many of you music blog readers (have no doubt) read countless times over the course of the past year, the band self-released an EP every month of '06. The material the EPs produced was surprisingly solid for the most part, and as of this year they have signed with the newly minted Dead Oceans label with an . . .

SXSW :: Richard Swift (Thursday Night)

Have you seen Richard Swift in a live setting?? If not, make it a high priority on your to-do list. I was pretty much blown away by the show with his full band Thursday evening at The Mohawk, and from the looks of the crowd (a veritible "who's who" in indie rock) so was everyone else. When the band broke into the sugar sweet pop perfection of the chug-a-long "Most . . .

SXSW :: The Whigs (Thursday)

Oooo weee...back home in L.A., and as expected, SXSW, and Austin in general, did not disappoint. The four days and nights of music, old (and new) friends, bbq and beer, coupled with agreeable weather, made for another excellent SXSW experience. I'll be posting more detailed thoughts from the festival throughout the week, but in the meantime here are some notes I had jotted down about Thursday's events in Austin.

SXSW 2007 :: Heading To Austin

Team Drunkard is about to head out the door to catch a plane to Austin for this year's SXSW festivities. Therefore, things will no doubt be a little quiet around here, BUT, you can keep up with my adventures, and a gaggle of other folks', via the Rough Mix SXSW blog. I should be doing brief posts over there about three times per day describing what's going on downtown in the clubs and the at day parties. Bring on . . .

Neil Young :: Live, Massey Hall (1971)

Today marks the "official" release of Neil Young's 1971 live at Massey Hall performance in CD format (with an accompanying DVD). This is the second live offering in preparation for Neil Young's long awaited archives project.

Here are some notes on The Massey Hall release in Neil's own words: "This is the album that should have come out between . . .

Bonnie “Prince” Billy :: I Am Drinking Again EP

The I Am Drinking Again EP was released via Domino records in 1998 and consists of two songs, on original, and one a cover of The Cranberries "Dreaming My Dreams." I have never heard the Cranberries original, but have long loved Oldham's cover off the EP. Anyone out there know the original, and is it similar?

Here are a couple of tracks off the Chronic Town EP that started it all back in 1982. The EP can now be found on the

The Duke Spirit :: Covered In Love

This is what we listened to a lot over the weekend. It's a four song covers EP The Duke Spirit released digitally in Europa last November via Rough Trade. Travis at Medication turned me onto it (thanks).

From Rough Trade: "The Duke Spirit return with this Rough Trade digital exclusive featuring four cover versions: Desmond Dekker's '007 (Shanty Town)'; Jessie Mae Hemphill’s . . .

I Might Be Wrong…

At the time of The Eraser's release I was in the middle of two months of travel, and could not be bothered, so i just ignored it. And truthfully, based on the description and the handful of reviews I glanced at, it just did not seem all that interesting.

Cut to last month: a friend, while visiting, left a copy with me urging I check it . . .

Dr. John :: Sun Moon & Herbs

[ I ran out of time last month to get through all the New Orleans posts I wanted to do prior to Fat Tuesday, so here is one that was all lined up in the trick bag. ]

Released in 1971, Sun Moon & Herbs walks that thin line between the backwoods, psychedelic, voodoo blues of Gris Gris and the return to New Orleans r&b that the Doctor would soon explore on his next LP, 1972's Gumbo.
