Not unlike Ethan Miller's side-project, Howlin' Rain, this latest Comets On Fire album embraces such '70s rock luminaries as The Allman Brothers and Hendrix. Picking up where Blue Cathedral left off, become a member or log in.

This past week Pitchfork Media presented, in my opinion, it's best feature yet. The website listed it's top 200 songs of the 1960s. As a dedicated follower of roots, be them musical or historical, I found this list to be both fascinating, and at times perplexing. But hey, one cannot expect to agree with every choice, but all in all we were . . .

I want to say something here that will make you take notice of the track below by the Portland duo that record and perform under the name Horse Feathers. The reason I want to say something inviting is that this is a song you need in your iTunes - or your iPod - or discman - or walkman - or car stereo. I would like to say something that would persuade you that this is not another run-of-the-mill quirky indie-folk throwaway, but something you might come back to time and again. Actually . . .

I ran into Karling Abbeygate's voice by chance while browsing unknown artists on MySpace a few months ago. Initially, before listening to the tunes themselves, I was just taken with her excellent cowgirl boots. Mighty fine shit-kickers, but as it turned out, even better music. A modern day hybrid of Patsy Cline and Brenda Lee, Abbeygate croons in the style of the best 1950'5 Country & Western . . .

Dogme 95's Arcadian Hymns is one of my favorite albums of 2006 by a band or artist I did not know of prior to the beginning the year. Mission Label describes the artist's sound in the press release as: "Think of a 1940's prison gang jamming with Kraftwerk in the garden of Olympia, WA. It is a treat." What can I say, they . . .

The Idiot is the predecessor to Pop's more well known and commercially beloved solo album, Lust For Life. In the mid-Seventies after a homeless stint on the streets of Los Angeles, a strung out Pop checked himself into the Neuropsychiatric Institute in L.A. After his hospitalization Pop joined Dabecome a member or log in.
The Skirts and their brand of piano-driven pop music are about to blow up, and blow up in a big way. Eschewing typical indie-rock guitar swagger for melodies sweet enough to sugar your cereal, Modern Skirts self-released album Catalogue of Generous Men hooks you straight through with it's catchy and tight niche Pop tunes. Highly recommended for fans of Chris Mills, Brendan Benson, The . . .

Heads up -- The Long Winters new tune "Fire Island, AK" will be played on this week's little radio show -- it's off their latest LP Putting The Days To Bed, and if you're into that indie power-pop thing you'll love it. This . . .

Post-Punk legends (and working band of the present), Mission of Burma, have returned with The Obliterati --their third LP since their 2004 "comeback" album. In the spirit of all things Burma, An Aquarium Drunkard wants to give away some M.O.B treats to those readers with a sense of appreciation for musical history. If any of the following items grab your attention, keep reading . . .

People, you really need Jacques Dutronc in your life. One way or another, this '60s actor/singer/songwriter will find his way in. The somewhat seedy side of suave and debonair French pop never got much better than this, not for my money anyway. For years, Dutronc's music has been an instant crowd-pleaser at parties -- it just so perfectly sets the scene. My French is terrible, so I catch maybe three words to one . . .

Riding the momentum of last year's album Nobody's Darlings and the honestly of the bare-boned, band-on-the-road-documentary Dreaming In America, Lucero is back with possibly their strongest and most consistent listen yet. Produced by David Lowery in his Virginia studio . . .

Over beers earlier this summer at Athfest, team clermont's Lucas Jensen casually mentioned that The Theatre Fire's Everybody Has A Darkside album was his favorite release of '06. I was immediately intrigued as: a) we share similar tastes b) I had never heard of the Fort Worth band, and c) it was only mid-June. Now, having owned and digested the album for close to a month . . .

Hitting their stride (and the record-buying public) with not one, but two, albums this year is Brooklyn's Oakley Hall. The latter of the two, Gypsum Strings, sees the psych-country-rock monsters burning through another set of experimental gothica, beginning with the shit-hot guitar lead on the album's opener "Confidence Man
