Superwolf :: Revisited

Will Oldham, under any and all of his many monikers, entrances me. His bearded, spooky, eclectic-mountain-weirdo persona combined with his gothic lyrics work on my imagination something fierce. The fact he rarely gives interviews only adds to to his mystique. I would imagine in the age of the Internet and instant information it is harder than ever to remain so elusive/mysterious. More power to him.I recently revisited last years become a member or log in.

The Twilight Singers :: Powder Burns

Powder Burns :: May 16, 2006Greg Dulli's back. Again. The new Twilight Singers joint, Powder Burns, certainly doesn't break any new ground, but absolutely should please fans of he-of-the-constant-cigarette-&-smirk. While I do like both The Afghan Whigs and Twilight Singers, I find I have to take them both in small doses. It's as if I . . .

Built To Spill :: You In Reverse

"Heavily anticipated" hardly begins to express the level of enthusiasm Built To Spill fans have pent up since the band's last full-length, 2001's Ancient Melodies From the Future. Tomorrow sees the release of the band's sixth proper album -- their fourth on Warner Brothers. Good news -- the band's instrumental tendencies are back....meaning . . .

Josh Ritter :: The Animal Years

I imagine you will be reading (and hearing) a lot about Josh Ritter's upcoming Tuesday release, The Animal Years, as you should. Having spent just over a week with the album, I can tell you it is my favorite of his catalog thus far. His most fully realized and mature work to date, Ritter's release of the album's cornerstone track . . .

Brute :: Them Boys Is Morally Challenged

Several times in the past, on An Aquarium Drunkard, I have written about vic Chesnutt and his various projects and side projects. This last time, someone left a comment for me asking why I had yet to post anything on Brute, Chesnutt's collaboration with fellow Athenians Widespread Panic. Well, I thought about this and had no good reason why I had not, as the two Brute albums are my favorite Chesnutt incarnation thus far. So hats off to you commenter, for reminding me of . . .

Lucero :: Now Touring/The Attic Tapes

New Drunkard favorite, Lucero, is presently on tour in the Eastern half of the U.S. No immediate West coast dates planned, so I personally won't be seeing them for awhile, but you should. Also of note, the band has recently re-issued The Attic Tapes LP that has until now been out-of-print. Get 'em while they're hot. Note: Also included on The Attic Tapes is the band's cover of . . .

Now Podcasting Episode II :: Funk/Soul/R&B

I had a good time putting today's episode together, as it focuses on old funk, soul, and r&b. Also had the opportunity to pull some old gems out of my trick-bag, dust them off, and give them a spin. Tune in for: The Meters, The J.B.'s, Stevie Wonder, Galactic, Mofro, and more. Disclosure: I realize the sound on the last podcast was quite bad (read: shitty), but it was, ahem, in the "beta stages." I . . .

The Rosebuds :: Birds Make Good Neighbors

Birds Make Good Neighbors did not enter my radar until late 2005, so it's still nice and fresh around here criss-crossing the rooms with it's bright and sunny pop. The Raleigh, North Carolina based husband & wife duo continue here on their second LP with their brand of jangly guitar-laden . . .

Aquarium Drunkard :: Now Podcasting Vol. 1

That's right. Ye olde Drunkard now has a Podcast. Just think, you can now listen to me on the train/bus/car/ipod/stationary bike?/whatever. But, if you don't do any of those things, feel free to just listen to it via iTunes, etc. Subscribe to my feed and have the weekly edition dropped right in your media player. Dig that. Here's this week's show, along . . .

Mark Pickerel And His Praying Hands

May 9th sees the release of the Bloodshot debut of Mark Pickerel And His Praying Hands. Mark's music is a loose medley of telecaster twang, pedal-steel, surf-rock riffs, weird pontifications, reflections, darkly twisted humor, and non-linear storytelling. That's a mouthful. If your into Jim White, spin these.DOWNLOAD:MP3: Mark . . .

Nicolai Dunger :: Here Is My Song…

Was this album destined to be part of my "Lost Album Series"? From what I have read, it sounds like it was a distinct possibility, Stateside at least. But like Whiskeytown's Pneumonia, this . . .

Gomez :: Back In Operation?

In the late 1990's Gomez shot right out of the gate with two strong, self-assured albums back-to-back. Liquid Skin, the latter of the two, sounded so much like a continuation of their debut LP, Bring It On, the critics just . . .

Neil Young :: Under The Covers

One of the fine folks who reads Aquarium Drunkard shot me an email asking if I was familiar with this Neil Young tribute album. I was not...a big thank you for the tip. After investigating, I realized I had actually heard a couple of these covers (Pixies, etc.), but not in relation to this collection . . .
