Gomez :: Back In Operation?

In the late 1990's Gomez shot right out of the gate with two strong, self-assured albums back-to-back. Liquid Skin, the latter of the two, sounded so much like a continuation of their debut LP, Bring It On, the critics just . . .

Neil Young :: Under The Covers

One of the fine folks who reads Aquarium Drunkard shot me an email asking if I was familiar with this Neil Young tribute album. I was not...a big thank you for the tip. After investigating, I realized I had actually heard a couple of these covers (Pixies, etc.), but not in relation to this collection . . .

The Lanois Touch :: Wrecking Ball

There is a reason Wrecking Ball is cited as the ideal when it comes to the artist, production, and music all coming together, in what appears, an effortless synergy. Daniel Lanois has a production style all his own, no matter if he's working on his own material, scoring soundtracks, or with working other artists (Bob Dylan, U2, etc). Said to act as . . .

Re-united R.E.M. :: Country Feedback 2006

photo credit: spotted This past Saturday night at the Georgia Theatre in Athens, a re-united R.E.M took the stage to perform Country Feedback, after the Minus 5 show, including original drummer Bill Berry. From murmurs.com: R.E.M. played as a four piece last night in Athens, GA at the end of the Minus 5's set . . .

Hem :: No Word From Tom

I have posted on Hem before...hell, not even a month ago, but this album deserves a little extra push, especially for those of you into the twangy-alt.country side of the A.D. blog. When I originally posted their cover of R.E.M.'s So. Central Rain, I was just . . .

Urge Overkill :: Saturation (1993)

It's been awhile. I found this cd in my closet this afternoon while looking for an old Bob Marley bootleg. I didn't come across the Marley boot, but I did find myself re-acquainted with this album. Saturation was Urge Overkill's 1993 major label (Geffen) debut (and the last UO album I heard) prior to their short-lived popularity derived from Tarantino's

Band of Gypsys :: New Year’s Eve 1970

Been sitting around tonight after dinner, drinking newcastle's, and listening to some old records with friends. Hendrix's Band of Gypsys came on the changer, and as always, I found myself grinning. If you haven't made this recording a part of your life, start today with this first track off the album below. A six song snapshot taken of Hendrix . . .

Talkdemonic :: Beat Romantic

photo credit (www.luckymadison.com)Last night, The National , exceeded my expectations playing their show at The Troubadour -- and I had pretty lofty expectations. Opener, Talkdemonic, were fantastic as well in a Live setting, working up their batch of ambient folk awash in banjos, violins, live drums and laptop beats. I had spent a few weeks with their latest album prior to the show and . . .

The National :: Tonight @ The Troubadour

To be honest, if I had spent more time with Alligator last year before making the "'best of '05" list, chances are, ol' Sufjan might have had a real run for his money. Regardless . . .

Robert Walter’s 20th Congress :: Soul Jazz

If you are into funk/soul/jazz Robert Walter's 20th Congress is an act to see Live if at all possible. Former Greyboy Allstar, Robert Walter, continued on his West coast boogaloo mission and expanded on it further with his band the 20th Congress after the Greyboy's demise. Fans of the B-3 organ will love these. Notes . . .

Lost Album Series VII :: The Tall Sessions

The unreleased album Tall is the holy grail for Black Crowes fans. It is reported to exist, but that is all.

If you ever had a doubt about The Black Crowes owning rock & roll in the early to mid-nineties you need look no further than the sessions that would have been the Tall album. Stop and go recordings -- high . . .

Kris Kristofferson :: This Old Road

One of the artists I really hoped to catch while in Austin at SXSW was Kris Kristofferson. The man embodies the country-music-outlaw-scoundrel-legend mythos, and I wanted to latch on to some of that magic in a live setting. Being Texas, even my cab-driver had a "Kris story" -- turns out Kristofferson was his father-in-law's private helicopter pilot in the early '60s, making daily runs from Houston out to the Oil rigs and back. I silently wondered how man tunes Kris . . .

Centro-matic :: Fort Recovery

Quickly edging in as one of my top albums of 2006, Centro-matic's Fort Recovery keeps all the promises made by their (and Will Johnson's) lofty back-catalog over the years. Others have noticed as well. Just last week I read Drive-By Trucker Patterson Hood is heralding it as his favorite . . .
