Neil Young :: Archives Vol. 1: 1963 -1972

Here's the thing about the first installment of Neil Young's Archives project: only the obsessive will care, and with the (variable) price point, care enough to pony up the cash to purchase.   This was never intended to appeal to the casual fan and/or newbie.   Now that alone isn't revelatory, but when one considers the amount of previously released material included, and how long . . .

Memphis And The Delta Blues Trail

"I got to keep moving, blues falling down like hail. And the day keeps on remindin' me, there's a hellhound on my trail." - Robert Johnson

Beginning in October of 2007 my wife and I embarked on a joint venture to explore, document and report on the the current state of Delta Blues Trail spanning TN, AR and MS.     For those unaware, the Mississippi Delta is famously said to begin in the lobby of The Peabody Hotel, in Memphis, TN, ending on Catfish Row in Vicksburg, MS.   All told we spent approximately two and half . . .

Lî´ Borges :: S/T (1972)

After two weeks of near impenetrable June Gloom here in Los Angeles the sun has again decided to grace us with its presence. With it, Lî´ Borges' 1972 self-titled album sounds that much better.  I'm a strong proponent of situational listening; I believe in both the late-night album and Sunday morning background music . . .

David Byrne :: Glass, Concrete & Stone

"Anxiety and angst can certainly produce some interesting work, but it's not the only way to make music. I'm also not as obsessive and crazy as I used to be." -David Byrne (via)

The name David Byrne has been popping up in the news quite a bit lately.   He was the featured artist in last month's Fader icon issue, his record label, become a member or log in.

Status Quo :: Pictures of Matchstick Men

I've recently been reintroduced to Telephone Free Landslide Victory, Camper Van Beethoven's 1985 debut, via a copy of the 2004 reissue.   While I never gave Cracker, David Lowery's second project much of a chance, the Camper Van Beethoven catalog holds up surprisingly well; far better than a lot of their musical peers branded . . .

The Clique :: Superman

Beginning last year with Murmur, the R.E.M. catalog is once again getting the redux treatment -- up next, Reckoning (more on that next week). Listening the reissue I've been digging out my IRS-era vinyl including Lifes Rich Pageant. On it, with Mike Mills on lead vocals, the band covers "Superman" by The Clique, a Texas based sixties pop band . . .

Sonic Youth :: The Eternal

Rounding out their third decade as a band, with sixteen full-length records under their belt, Sonic Youth once again find themselves back on an independent label, Matador Records, after nearly two decades under the wing of   Geffen/Universal. This is only worth mentioning as trivia as Sonic Youth is not band known for pandering to its audience, nor its label (yeah, I'm looking at you become a member or log in.

Dump :: That Skinny Motherfucker With The High Voice?

Last week Matador Records treated Yo La Tengo fans to "Periodically Double Or Triple," the first single off the band's upcoming September release, Popular Songs. If you've been following along the past few months than you're well aware of our sincere appreciation for YLT's other project, that of fictional garage rock revivalists Condo Fucks. But this post is neither about Yo La Tengo nor Condo Fucks, this is about Prince -- well, to . . .

Grizzly Bear :: Owner of A Lonely Heart

It's June -- we are now almost officially half-way through the year. Thus far - and not surprisingly - Grizzly Bear's Veckatimest is, at present, ranking as my favorite release of 2009.     The week of its release (May 26th) the album landed on the Billboard top 10, charting at number 8, with over . . .
