Bash & Pop :: Friday Night is Killing Me

Seems lately I've had to be up early on Saturday after Saturday after Saturday. Tomorrow being no different, I, of course, gravitated toward "Friday Night Is Killing Me" by Bash and Pop.

Tommy Stinson's first post-Replacements project, Bash and Pop, also drafted Steve Foley, the man who had filled in on . . .

Aquarium Drunkard Presents :: Bon Iver (3.20.08)

We're really excited about this one - in the world of Aquarium Drunkard, this is what we call a dream team. Thursday, March 20th, AD Presents: Bon Iver, Phosphorescent and White Hinterland, live at The Echo - and for this . . .

Devendra Banhart :: Always Something Happening

If you happen to tune in to either one of the Aquarium Drunkard radio shows (that would be SIRIUS and/or Little Radio) you can expect to see this track, in an upcoming playlist, in a few weeks time. Like the former AD Podcasts, I'm getting back into themed shows (note: I use the word "theme" loosely, here) - and this particular show will be two hours of . . .

Jesse Malin :: Walk On The Wild Side

Like some of you, I suffer from a condition that involves me personally investigating just about every Velvets, or Lou Reed, cover I can get my hands on -- I have fuel/friends specifically to thank for this one. After purchasing, and thoroughly enjoying, Jesse Malin's post-D Generation solo debut, 2002's The . . .

Pere Ubu :: Dub Housing (1978)

Please welcome AD's (now) semi-regular contributor, J. Neas, as he reflects on the seminal, if misunderstood, Pere Ubu's Dub Housing LP. As I read this I was reminded of first hearing the band, as they opened for the Pixies in Atlanta (at the Centerstage) in the fall of 1991. I was barely 16, but even then knew I was witnessing something special. - AD

Buddy Miles :: Dem Changes (R.I.P.)

Between travel, and gearing up for sxsw later this week, things have been busy around the AD camp, of late, but I would be remiss if I failed to get a little something up here regarding Buddy Miles passing, at the age of sixty, late last month. Without a doubt, the man had soul power - just look at that fucking afro. Most widely known as part of Jimi Hendrix's, post Experience outfit, become a member or log in.

Off The Record :: Kelley Stoltz (San Francisco, CA)

Off The Record is a recurring, feature here on the Drunkard, that marries two of my greatest interests; music and travel. Having a locals perspective when visiting a new locale is the difference between experiencing it through the lens of a tourist and of that of a native.

Off The Record gathers some of my favorite artists, asks them to reflect on their city of residence, and choose a handful of places they could not live without, be them bookstores, bars, restaurants or vistas.

Today's installment of Off The Record, again finds . . .

The Stranglers :: No More Heroes (RE: Eliot Spitzer)

We're used to politicians being crooked, but it always hurts a little more when someone you think might actually be on the up-and-up comes down as Eliot Spitzer did today. Is, as the Seafarer stated, all glory tarnished?

Good thing The Stranglers had their eye on the ball back in 1978. The title track from their second album, become a member or log in.

The Gutter Twins :: Saturnalia

Super group or side project: different sets of expectations accompany either term. The super group is always hoped to be something akin to the sum of its parts and rarely meets them. The side project is often assumed to be tossed off and spur of the moment, so if they end up being fantastic, it's a great surprise. So what to expect from something that can easily invite both terms? Let's give it a shot.

Nick Lowe :: Jesus of Cool (Anniversary Edition)

Pop nirvana. Let's first take a moment and all give a collective high five to Yep Roc for reissuing Lowe's 1978 debut, as it had been out-of-print for years (they nail the packaging too, so you can toss that 4th generation, burnt, CD-R in your closet).

La Blogotheque :: The Jicks (San Francisco)

Capturing truly unique performances, our friends at La Blogotheque have been working overtime, this year, since expanding their operations stateside. Now with a West coast base, the Take Away Shows have been moving up and down the coast filming some of our favorite artists in (their trademark), non traditional settings. While you can literally spend hours perusing the archives (and, we have), we wanted to specifically point out the recent addition to become a member or log in.

Obsession :: Rare Psych (Compilation)

Last week while in San Francisco, knowing my interest in obscure sixties/seventies psych-rock, Dodge hooked me up with a copy of this recent Bully Records compilation for the ride home to L.A. Comprised of fifteen tracks, the set boasts varied international genre exercises (Indian, Brazilian, Peruvian, Turkish, Argentinian and Uruguayan) ranging from psych, garage-rock, poly-rhymic fusion, and beyond.
