The Girls Can’t Help It :: Rhino Records (1984 Girl Group Comp)

This most recent trend of American artists mining the sounds of vintage sixties girl groups (Dum Dum Girls, Best Coast, etc.) inspired me to pull out Rhino Records 1984 new-wave, all female, compilation The Girls Can't Help It. At thirteen tracks Girls is an inspired time capsule featuring, among others, Leslee Swanson, Tiger Lilly

Robb London :: Gloria

I'll be the first to admit that, on paper, getting excited about checking out yet another cover of Them's "Gloria" sounds like a losing proposition. And in most cases you would be right. Culled from a Robb London set I came across on Garage Hangover last year, this is the exception. Supplanting Them's (and 90% of subsequent covers) chugging, seminal, garage blast in favor of languid, seemingly off-the-cuff white . . .

The Antlers :: The AD Interview

A lot has changed for Brooklyn-born quintet The Antlers since last year's breakout LP, Hospice. A concept album about the relationship between a hospice worker and a dying cancer patient, Hospice is an intense, atmospheric triumph of spirit, covering a vast range of emotion, that while carrying the weight of despair, is ultimately a story of survival. With an upcoming show at Boston's House of Blues (with the Editors, 2/18/10), frontman/vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Peter Silberman found the time to discuss their unlikely album in a recent phone interview.

Harlan T. Bobo :: Mlle. Chatte

Though it flew way under most radars outside of Memphis, TN, Harlan T. Bobo's debut LP, Too Much Love, was one of my favorite releases of 2006. An outlier on the typically noisy Goner Records label, Too Much Love was a love sick paean to romance that seemed . . .

Texas Tornado :: The Times & Music of Doug Sahm

Most folks, particularly those from Texas, know a little about Doug Sahm. Twice on the cover of Rolling Stone, he was the original cowboy hipster and a Texas icon. Fans revere Doug for his genre-defining work with the Sir Douglas Quintet, who in the 60s forged the sound of Tex Mex music, and they admire the seemingly reckless . . .

Off The Record :: White Hinterland (Portland, OR)

Off The Record is a recurring feature here on the Drunkard that marries two of my greatest interests; music and travel. Having a locals perspective when visiting a new locale is the difference between experiencing it through the lens of a tourist and of that of a native.

Off The Record gathers some of my favorite artists, asks them to reflect on their city of residence, and choose a handful of places they could not live without -- be them bookstores, bars, restaurants or vistas.

The first thing you should know about  White Hinterland is that it's no longer soley Casey Dienel's nom de tune. Now a full-fledged group (including Shawn Creedon who contributes to the below) White Hinterland prepare for the March 9th release of Kairos, their second full-length following up 2008's (mostly) French covers EP,   Luniculaire. Dienel's been one to watch since we first covered her debut, Wind Up Canary in 2006. Kairos only furthers that sentiment. Below is Casey's guide to her adopted city of Portland, OR.

Mountain Man :: Honeybee (Video, San Francisco)

Our friends in the Bay, videographers Yours Truly, just sent over their latest session with Vermont's Mountain Man. Having first heard them last summer they have since become my favorite, recent, New England export. Gorilla Vs. Bear has another exclusive from the session, "Mouthwings," available here.

Mountain Man's 2009 EP is available for download via Bandcamp.

The Soft Pack :: S/T

Do as I did and cue up The Soft Pack in your car, on cruise control, at a comfortable speed just above the posted Speed Limit (9/mph in my case). It doesn't feel like you're racing, but, with no one ahead of you or in the rearview mirror, the world still goes by at a blistering pace. As albums go, The Soft Pack truly felt like it was meant for that ride. Thirty-two plus minutes of sheer will-power, chugging along, on all cylinders but never struggling to keep up. When the last song finished, three minutes from my destination, I couldn't bring myself to select a specific track to repeat and finish the ride---I wanted the entire experience again.

The Soft Pack, even in their previous incarnation as the Muslims, never seemed quite at home with their Los Angeles (by way of San Diego) brethren. The energy always felt different, as is the case here. As albums go, this is one of force - and not force in the form of a push, but as in nudging you along for it's entire half-hour, gently prodding at your back. An invitation to keep on driving. Highly recommended.

The Soft Pack's self-titled LP is out new via Kemado Records. Video after the jump. words/ b. kramer

AD Presents :: Raven Sings The Blues – A Mixtape

Here we go, the first installment of an irregular series in which I plan on highlighting some of my favorite voices online (and beyond). We're kicking off with Raven Sings The Blues. Based in NYC, since 2006, Raven has been a go-to source dealing in garage, psych, lo-fi and other related curiosities---both new and old. I asked RavenAndy to curate the following mixtape summing up RSTB's aesthetic. At 20+ tracks, it does just that. Andy is my guest this Friday during the second hour . . .

AD Presents :: Smith Westerns/Pearl Harbor (Tonight, Chinatown)

Tonight in Chinatown: Aquarium Drunkard presents the above show/house party at Madame Wongs. It's first come, first serve -- I'll leave it at that (read between the lines). Also, there is a special guest we can't announce here, but it's an AD fave. See ya there . . .
