The Cardinals :: January 30th, Los Angeles, CA

I've witnessed numerous incarnations of The Ryan Adams Show over the years; the good, the bad and the ugly. Last Wednesday evening, here in L.A., Adams and his band The Cardinals transcended all three coalescing into what was the tightest, most inspired, most professional and, above all, most entertaining Adams show I've seen yet. Two separate sets of full-on rock & roll -- the kind of show you always knew Adams was capable of, but only hoped he would one day deliver upon . . .

Echoplex Residency :: Sermon On Sunset Boulevard

The exclusion of Rickie Lee Jones album, The Sermon On Exposition Boulevard, from my 2007 Year In Review was a complete oversight. Woops. Having both reviewed it as a freelance . . .

Graceland :: Elvis Has Indeed Left The Building

Part II of II of my Memphis Sunday post from December. Graceland, the King's once home, and final resting place, did exactly what I had hoped: it blew me away. Note that I am speaking of the actual estate, and property, immediately surrounding it, and not the bogus tourist trap "museums" across the street (although the car exhibition could be interesting, if it wasn't an extra, but . . .

San Francisco Nuggets :: 1965-1970 (Rhino Box Set)

Flying under the radar, this recent Rhino release compiles San Francisco garage, rock & roll, and psychedelia tracks spanning the years 1965-1970 -- arguably the city's most fertile era for new music. The main reason this collection excels (other than the fab booklet) is simply having these tracks compiled in one place. Yes, those of us who obsess over, and collect, this kind of stuff have many a selection squirreled away on . . .

Colin Meloy :: Sings Morrissey/Collins/Sam Cooke

While I've never been accused of being an avid Decemberists fan, I am a Smiths/Morrissey pundit, and think The Decemberists principle songwriter Colin Meloy released a genuinely great EP of Mozzer covers - back in 2005 - while doing a solo acoustic tour. Both his style and vocal approach were perfect for the, for the most part . . .

J.J. Cale :: Rewind: The Unreleased Recordings

Last October J.J. Cale fans saw their hero's vaults unlocked with the release of Rewind: The Unreleased Recordings, which collects 14 previously unavailable tracks. For an artist whose songs have famously been covered for decades, it's great to see Cale, himself, work his way around other artist's work. Here are two of . . .

Long John Baldry :: Flying (It Ain’t Easy, 1971)

I was originally turned on to the late British bluesman, Long John Baldry, via his 1971 LP, It Ain't Easy. Initially, it was Baldry's take on The Faces "Flying" that stopped me in my tracks . . .

Neil Young Archives Say No To CD Release

Earlier today Billboard announced that Neil Young's latest plan, per his much delayed Archives project, is to release the set in a multi-media format, exclusively on Blu-Ray and DVD. Yup, you heard him: no compact discs. Share you thoughts on this news in the comments.   I imagine a number of us will be ripping the audio content, and uploading it to our iPods and/or creating our own CDrs.

The Glands :: Self-Titled (2000)
