Off The Record is a new, recurring, feature here on the Drunkard that will marry two of my greatest interests; music and travel. Having a locals perspective when visiting a new locale is the difference between experiencing it through the lens of a tourist and of that of a native. Off The Record gathers some of my favorite artists, asks them to reflect on their city of residence, and choose a handful of places they could not live without, be them bookstores, bars, or vistas.

Released last week on the UK based Harmless Records, this import compilation gathers up 18 tracks originally featured on Surf movie soundtracks during the '60s and '70s. Comprised mainly of garage and psychedelia, the comp is pure surf kitsch from the days of long boards and longer beards.

When it comes to classic and essential Rolling Stones albums, 1981's Tattoo You (while not bad) doesn't immediately spring to mind, but it was without a doubt the best Stones album of the '80s.

(Sir) Paul McCartney played a 'secret' show here in L.A. on Wednesday at Amoeba on Sunset. Secret is a bit of a misnomer as the sidewalks were jammed with people waiting in line for wristbands days in advance. This in-store was of course part of the promotional blitz supporting Macca's new album become a member or log in.

Listening to At Dawn for the first time, five or so years ago, was a memorable occasion...seeing the band live for first time was even more so. Once my curiosity was piqued I began to scrounge around online looking for other MMJ recordings besides their debut become a member or log in.
Jimmy Smith's 1972 Live LP Root Down is greasy, nasty and funky all the way. Recorded with his band live in Los Angeles, the occasion proved to be a watershed moment for soul/jazz/fusion. Having revolutionized the Hammond B3 and the way it's played, this LP single-handedly sent me out seeking similar genre . . .
