The late gram ParsonsPrior to his stint with The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers a young Gram Parsons formed The International Submarine Band shortly after dropping out of Harvard. One of my favorite country singers, Parsons, even at a young age, was able to convey an honesty and truth to his music that only increased with subsequent albums. These tracks, plus an additional one, can be found on the excellent compilation entitled become a member or log in.

The production, the instrumentation, the accompanying vocals...all of it soaked in '70s era sentimentality, minus any of the pastiche. become a member or log in.

It would be easy to write these two off as a White Stripes knock off: a) boy/girl duo - check. b) lo-fi garage rock - check. c) affection for bare-boned blues sludge riffs coupled with the oh-so-quiet/precious moments. check. But you would do yourself a disservice by stopping there and not delving past the surface. In the early '00s I dismissed many, many a good band due to the proliferation of the "The" bands at . . .

Clem Snide's Eef Barzelay has a solo joint out this month. It's all acoustic -- and it's all downtrodden. So, if you don't like downer records you would absolutely loathe this one.
