Lee Hazlewood & Nancy Sinatra :: Jackson

Penned by Jerry Leiber and Billy Edd Wheeler, and made famous by Johnny Cash and June Carter (their take won a Grammy), "Jackson" hearkens back to the days of classic storytelling in song. The tune is also one of my favorite duets that Lee Hazlewood & Nancy Sinatra took on during their fruitful collaborative period. Sinatra's repetitive "Jackson, Jackson, Jackson," at the end, is tops.

Ted Lucas :: The Om Album

Ted Lucas got his start playing in a Detroit folk revival band called The Spike-Drivers, eventually leaving to form other groups The Misty Wizards, Horny Toads, and the Boogie Disease. While he was a respected figure in Michigan's folk and rock scene, his self-titled solo album (recorded largely in his attic studio during 1974) failed to break beyond local recognition.

The promo sticker nails the sound, placing Ted Lucas next to legends John Fahey, Nick Drake, and Skip Spence. It's a . . .

Travel by Sea :: Two States And The Blindness That Follows

What began as a songwriting experiment spanning two states, a hi-speed Internet connection, and a shared love of dark folk music, has since morphed into a living, breathing band.   Witnessing Travel by Sea's growth over the past four years has seen the project, between co-founders Kyle Kersten and Brian Kraft, steadily take on attributes that only come from performing live.

As a duo, the 1st two albums Travel by Sea released were the streamlined, exceptionally efficient, work of Kersten and Kraft. In short, Kersten would draft . . .

R.E.M. :: Fables of the Reconstruction (Reissue)

As the last remnants of Summer began to burn off throughout the length of September, the stage was set for taking in the reissue of R.E.M.'s third LP, 1985's Fables of The Reconstruction, as a whole. If context is indeed everything, then Fables is woolen, wood-smoke and that unmistakable crisping of Autumn air.

Twenty five years after its initial release, Fables continues to inhabit a curious place in the R.E.M. discography, which now includes fourteen full-length releases.   Perhaps ironically, as it was recorded in . . .

The Surf Creature :: Wild, Weird & Wet – A Compilation

A bit more wavy-gravy than some of the more straight-forward/run of the mill surf comps out there, The Surf Creature delivers 25 instrumental benders with a nod to the bizarre. This collection is an overview of the Surf Creature vinyl series Romulan Records began issuing awhile back. Toes on the nose, indeed.

Deerhunter :: Halcyon Digest

2010 can be summed up as the year of extreme musical escapism. For example, an influential and meaningful genre like “ambient” has been watered down into sub-categories like “witch-house”, “chill-wave”, “wave-gaze” and dozens more. Sigh. All of these terms represent the same basic feeling and trend that has dominated this year’s music releases, the powerful and influential blogosphere and even popular music criticism, yet none of these micro-genres feel like movements. Some of it is definitely memorable and holds promise beyond the bedroom recordings that have marked its heavy promotion and fuss. But let . . .

Cazumbi :: African Sixties Garage, Vol. 1

Considering the vast size and scope of the continent it's fair to say I listen to, write about, and feature a disproportionate amount of sixties and seventies afro-beat/Soweto/what-have-you on these pages. No apologies, as there have been a formidable amount of incredibly creative and interesting reissues and compilations of late, especially ramping  up six or so years ago. Having said that, here is something from the continent of a different stripe: volume one of the become a member or log in.

The Corin Tucker Band :: 1,000 Years

When Sleater-Kinney called it quits (or went on hiatus, depending on your stories) in 2006, it was on the heels of their finest moment - a riotous, gargantuan sounding record called The Woods. The band had been making slight alterations to its unique sound for the previous four albums and what turned out to be their swan song became their biggest stylistic leap . . .

South San Gabriel :: All Night Long (Lionel Ritchie)

Denton, TX's Centro-matic/South San Gabriel quietly release, and tour, their records in relative obscurity. As a longtime fan I've noticed diminished returns in not the quality of their work, but in the attendance of their shows and general reception to their output. A shame, too, as Will Johnson and Co. continue to impress for those keeping up. Their latest, the seven song EP, become a member or log in.

David Bowie :: Station To Station (Reissue)

Versatility: a trait that when forced, more often than not, suffers from feeling exactly that way. Historically this is an issue David Bowie has avoided for the most part---especially during his 70s peak. Unlike a number of the artist's contemporaries, Bowie has, rather effortlessly, traversed the ins and outs of various trends, fashions, and genres over the past four decades. Very few artists can straddle both the uber-mainstream that is American classic-rock radio and the icy proto-punk landscapes explored with Brian Eno just a few short years later. But Bowie did, and did . . .

L’Aventure :: Television’s Adventure Reimagined

If you missed this in June.... Last year Aquarium Drunkard released RAM On L.A. -- a local music compilation featuring eleven Los Angeles artists each covering a track off Paul McCartney's 1971 LP, RAM. Today we're following that up with L'Aventure -- a local music compilation featuring eight Los Angeles artists paying tribute to Television's sophomore LP, Adventure.

Like its predecessor, L'Aventure is an attempt to capture, if only for an instant, a slice of what is happening musically in L.A. in 2010. Or more specifically, it's an attempt to highlight eight Los Angeles artists that have, individually, caught my ear over the past couple of years. By no means all encompassing, L'Aventure is a great jumping off point for those interested in the diverse landscape that is L.A.'s music.

Why Adventure? Why now? Like RAM, the album is used as a template---as a cohesive force---bonding these, at times, disparate artists together. A post-punk landmark, Television's debut, Marquee Moon, tends to garner most of the adulation. It's follow-up, Adventure, is now a classic album in its own right that seems to regularly get lost on the mix. In short, it is time for a reevaluation---perhaps this is the beginning of that conversation.

Available as a free high-quality download (FLAC and/or 320kbs mp3), we are encouraging those who have the means to donate to the Los Angeles based Silverlake Conservatory of Music. 100% of all donations go directly to the conservatory. Huge thanks to the artists who generously donated both their time and talents to this project. Artwork by Jeremy Benson, layout by Ben Kramer.
