Arthur Lee :: Vindicator (1972)

Late last year when we wrote about Arthur Lee's superb soul spin "Everybody's Gotta Live," we hadn't yet heard Vindicator, the track's 1972 mothership and Lee's solo debut. Admittedly, we (I) naively assumed that Vindicator would be a record full of similar songs--an exploration of Lee's R&B range that . . .

Steely Dan :: Live/Sessions/Radio, ’74-’00

This one goes out to all the Steely Dan freaks, nerds and weirdos out there -- you know who you are, and to the haters as well (you, too, know who you are). My friend and fellow Dan advocate, T. Law, put this comp together about nine years ago when we were both knee-deep in our excitement over the release of Fagen and Becker's first studio LP in 20 years, Two Against Nature . . .

Laura Gibson :: Beasts of Seasons

In the hyper-pace of the 21st century, it's a given that things at times feel disposable. We live in a culture that exudes and promotes quantity over quality, where "immediate" and "fair" are qualities that increasingly (and at times shockingly) trump "worth-the-wait" and "excellent." In spite of this, art still prevails, and at its best even drives one to slow down, take a breath, and actually appreciate. Laura Gibson may not have intentionally set out to do this, but on her new LP, become a member or log in.

Vetiver :: Tight Knit

As a listener, and a fan, I buy into the world of Vetiver, or at least what I imagine the world of Vetiver to be - what I want it to be.   It's a place filled with dusty vinyl, vintage amps, seasoned sweaters, stone-built Bay area fireplaces and a little bit of mystery. And personally, I prefer a little mystery in my music -- the suspension of disbelief; something that is albeit harder to come by in the Internet-age (and, yes, I fully grasp the irony . . .

Dan Auerbach :: The AD Interview

Fresh off his appearance on Conan O'brien, and a week after the release of his solo debut, Keep It Hid, Dan Auerbach spoke on the phone with Aquarium Drunkard discussing, among other things, the process behind his new LP, Charles Bukowski, the Black Keys, playing with his uncles, and the old days . . .

To Willie, From Aquarium Drunkard

On To Willie, Phosphorescent's Matthew Houck pays tribute to the Red Headed Stranger by covering eleven of his favorite Nelson songs, from the better-known “The Party's Over” to the ultra-obscure “Heartaches of a Fool”. While the resulting album is a stunner, what's perhaps even more impressive is . . .

Taj Mahal and The Natch’l Blues…

Somewhere between Massachusetts and California, between the Mississippi Delta and Chicago, between the blues and rock & roll, between soul and jazz sits Taj Mahal. Simultaneously recognized and yet rarely heard, without radio aid or a bevy of co-genre players to be compared to, the man has a career that spans from sharing his first band with Ry Cooder, to friend of, and influence upon, the Rolling Stones (not to mention three . . .

Neil Young & Devo :: Hey Hey, My My (1982)

Ah yes, Neil in the early '80s. An interesting, if often ignored, era in the artist's four decade career. If you've read Shakey (and really, any card-carrying Neil Young fan should) you're aware the first half of the decade was rife with random experimentation and exploration . . .

Richard Buckner :: The Hill (Reissue, Revisited)

When it comes to Americana as a genre, many of its purveyors offer a sense that they've lived through their collection. No matter the story form or execution, you often believe (or are plainly told) that what you're hearing or reading or seeing has been informed by their life experiences. Up close and personal.

But Richard Buckner doesn't do that. He's visitor, a watcher. A traveler who disappears into the world and returns to us with its story, not his. (Physically, he . . .

Summon My Baptist Ways

In 2006 I spent a good bit of time with Dogme 95's debut LP, Arcadian Hyms. Thanks to a 100 gb hard drive and iTunes shuffle I was recently reminded of its lo-fi charms; i.e. the unlikely intersection of cheap Casio keyboards, fake beats, and backwoods pentecostal freakouts. The kind of unholy union found inside cheap, faded, comic books, warehouse shows, ironic hesher house parties and student art films. This is the stuff of make-shift time travel, snake handlings, handclaps, drum machines, bedroom humidity . . .
