Beach House :: Devotion

Beach House's 2006, self-titled, debut came off like an indie, boutique, '00s version of Mazzy Star's patent vocals crossed with lo-fi, dream-pop. What made it interesting, in the long run, is that the Baltimorean duo manged to do so with their own personal style avoiding kitsch. All gauzy, sleepy and . . .

No Depression :: R.I.P. 1995-2008

No Depression magazine, an alt.country/americana staple, announced yesterday that it will - after 74 issues, and 13 years in existence - be ceasing operations this Spring. June will see the final issue of the magazine and existing subscribers can expect a refund. Excerpt below:

"(The) circumstances are both complicated and painfully simple. The simple answer is that advertising revenue in this issue is 64% of what it was for our March-April issue just two years ago. We expect that number to continue to decline. The . . .

Elvis Costello :: Green Shirt/Party Girl – 1979

Let's first address the 800 lb gorilla in the room: Elvis Costello's catalog has notoriously, in the last decade, been reissued, repackaged, re-reissued, re-repackaged, and then some...if you're keeping score the latest "reissues" came out less than a year ago. Every few years, each reissue again touts itself as the "definitive" and/or "deluxe" edition, boasting outtakes, live material, demos, et al. As frustrating as it is for the fans, there are, in fact, gems to be had if one can stomach re . . .

The Grand Archives :: Via Seattle

We've been keeping loose tabs on the progress of this album since the news broke that Band of Horses co-founder, Mat Brooke, was leaving the band in the hands of Ben Bridwell (following BOH's 2006 debut Everything All The Time) to concentrate on his Grand Archives project. Now a year . . .

Liz Durrett/Vic Chesnutt :: Somewhere (Cover)

Check, check...any Italian readers in the house today? If so, heads up, Liz Durrett is presently touring Italy -- possibly in a town near you. I've seen Durrett, live, twice now, once solo and once with her uncle, and sometime musical co-conspirator, Vic Chesnutt. Both shows were great, but I don't believe I heard them duet on West Side Story's

Sister Nancy :: One Two Bam Bam

One of the more fulfilling aspects of DJ'ing a house party or event, and to a different extent, radio, is the immediate response to the track selection. There is no lag time - you can gauge the music's effect instantly. One of the strongest examples of this is Sister Nancy's signature dancehall classic, "Bam Bam." Without fail, every single time I have spun this live, or played it on the radio, someone, sometimes multiple people, have inquired as to its origin. This doesn't surprise . . .

The Replacements :: Twin/Tone Catalog Reissued

Mats fans have something to look forward to this Spring, as the band's Twin/Tone catalog is finally getting the deluxe reissue treatment, remastered, and chock full of demos, unreleased outtakes, etc, etc. (April 22 via Rhino). Fans of the the band's latter era albums also take note, as the Sire catalog reissues are tentatively set for a late 2008 release. (via billboard

Nigeria Special :: Nigerian Blues 1970-76

As our good friend, and fellow afro-beat enthusiast, Gorilla vs Bear, mentioned last week, Soundway Records has just released the compilation Nigeria Special featuring funk, r&b, afrobeat, soul, highlife, psych, and other subgenres from the region. I have many a collection from this era and region, and, so far, this comp is hanging with with the best of them.

Japancakes :: Loveless (My Bloody Valentine) 2007

The other night following the Drive-By Truckers show, here in LA, I had two things on my mind; 1st, how much fun, no matter how many times I've seen them, the Truckers are in a live setting, and 2nd, how after watching pedal steel wiz John Neff for two straight hours, how I wished I had thought to load Japancakes excellent become a member or log in.

Megafaun :: Find Your Mark/Lazy Suicide

Alright, I can almost guarantee that regular AD readers will be into the following tunes; and hey, now that we've installed the streaming media player, you may as well stream a track...you know, save yourself that 20 seconds of downloading, and get your preview on.

Megafaun, which I misread as Mega"fun" several times last week (and almost, live, while on the air), are a North Carolina based band that call the Research Triangle home. Already an indie bedrock (insert your favorite . . .

Townes Van Zandt :: Waitin’ Around To Die

I'm presently doing a bit of music supervision for an independent film, set in west Texas, and have been looking for the right mood for certain scenes. Not so much the exact song that will be accompanying the scene, but more so music that captures the essence of what the the narrative wants/needs/deserves...the nuance of a moment. Townes Van Zandt knew all about nuance.

Waylon Jennings :: Honky Tonk Heroes (1973)

The great Texas singer-songwriter, Holden Rushing, first turned me on to this album in his Venice beach abode during his three year stint out here in Los Angeles. Much obliged, Holden. Upon the receipt of the record, I was also told a tale that seemed to blur the line between fact and legend; a story about Waylon Jennings, Billy Joe Shaver and the genesis of the project that became become a member or log in.

The Magnetic Fields :: Distortion

The news last year that Stephen Merritt's next Magnetic Fields LP was to be coated in a thick slather of distortion, a la Jesus & The Mary Chain's Psychocandy, seemed to elicit two immediate and disparate responses: "what??", and, "yeah, that could be interesting." I fell into both camps, as while I may be a longtime JAMC fan, I am . . .

Throw Me A Statues's upcoming LP, Moonbeams, was the only album I listened to over the course of the weekend, and it's now carrying me into the new week. A good album will do that.
