Who Is Harry Nilsson? :: The Documentary

"Harry was a big bunny....with very sharp teeth." -- Paul Williams (songwriter & friend)

Harry Edward Nilsson III (June 15, 1941 — January 15, 1994) -- Over this past weekend I had the opportunity to check out a screening of the new Harry Nilsson documentary Who is Harry Nilsson (And Why is Everybody Talkin' About Him)? at the Egyptian Theatre, in Hollywood. It was outstanding; both perversely fascinating, and heartbreaking, and much like Nilsson's music, at exactly the same time.

Spoon :: Live @ Little Radio 7/16

Photo Credit: Timothy Norris
Spoon brought the heat last night to their "secret" show at the Little Radio warehouse in downtown Los Angeles. Literally. Two steps inside the brick-walled building, and the temperature rose a good 25 degrees. Nevertheless, the at capacity crowd swilled Dewars and listened to special guest, John Vanderslice, perform material off his upcoming album

King Tubby Meets The Aggrovators at Dub Station

Heads Up: We have something very exciting in the works with Trojan Records in correlation with their 40th anniversary. Details to come, but the long and short of it is that Drunkard readers will have the opportunity to win classic reggae and dub releases from the vast Trojan catalog. As you're well aware, I rarely do giveaways unless they are truly great -- like this one. Stay tuned for the details.

Harlan T. Bobo :: I’m Your Man

Memphis TN's Harlan T. Bobo has a new album out later this month (July 17th); it's called I'm Your Man, continuing where the excellent Too Much Love left off. Part of Harlan's draw, as an artist, has been the mystery surrounding him and his work. Having said that, listen to the interview (below) he did with BTR at your own risk.

Travel By Sea :: Autumn Tone Reissue

Autumn Tone (our label) has just reissued Travel By Sea's debut LP Shadows Rise in preparation for their next LP "Days of My Escape," which will be released via Autumn Tone in the late summer. We are big fans of this outfit, and thrilled they are on board with us. Do check them out...

No ordinary post-folk outfit, Travel by Sea’s music explores an aural countryside far past the traditional confines of their predecessors . . .

The Rolling Stones :: Rock And Roll Circus (1968)

First off, tip of the hat to public television (and radio) who consistently provide quality non-commercial programming. I make a point to support these, and the most recent reminder of why was randomly catching The Rolling Stones 1968 Rock And Roll Circus on L.A.'s PBS affiliate the other night. I had not seen this in some time and it was . . .

Bob Marley & The Wailers :: Radio Session 1973

"One Good Thing About Music, When It Hits You Feel No Pain. So Hit Me With Music..."

In an effort to highlight reggae and dub that's a bit outside of the mainstream, I had inadvertently never featured Bob Marley on the Drunkard's pages in the past 2+ years. I am going to seriously remedy that today with this classic radio session (allegedly) recorded in Sausalito, CA in 1973 (I say this because when I was originally given the CDR in the late '90s, it was labeled as such, but I have since prowled . . .

Off The Record :: Eef Barzelay (Nashville, TN)

Off The Record is a recurring feature here on the Drunkard that will marry two of my greatest interests; music and travel. Having a locals perspective when visiting a new locale is the difference between experiencing it through the lens of a tourist and of that of a native.

Off The Record gathers some of my favorite artists, asks them to reflect on their city of residence, and choose a handful of places they could not live without, be them bookstores, bars, restaurants or vistas.

Today we visit Nashville, TN with, former principal songwriter . . .

The New Pornographers :: Myriad Harbor

Although it does not officially drop until late August, the New Pornographers fourth LP, Challengers, has been a pretty constant jam around these parts the past few weeks. If your into indie-pop, you are most definitely already a rabid New Pornos fan, if not, well, you might want to get on that. Like, quick.

To The Sad, Sad Truth, The Dirty Lowdown

It's hard to express how much I really like this funky little '70s pop song. Even before the iPod and MP3 players were all the rage, I would throw this track on mix CDs and listen to it on my portable player with headphones. I particularly remember one such occasion, years ago, running through LAX in a desperate attempt to catch a flight while this Boz Scaggs tune provided the soundtrack. I missed it.

St. Vincent :: Marry Me (July 10th)

Without a doubt, St. Vincent's solo performance at Largo, this past May, stands as my favorite show thus far in 2007. Certainly high praise when you consider it was just Vincent (Annie Clark), her guitar, a kick drum, and piano.

That modest combination proved to be amazing -- prompting us to say this the day after: "In a word, her performance was breathtaking. Deftly moving from confessional singer-songwriter fare on the piano, to displaying avante-guard . . .
