Bobby “Blue” Bland :: Dreamer

Yeah, look at him. He bigger than you. When he lets it loose (See: "Yolanda" and "Cold Day In Hell" below), Bobby "Blue" Bland's nicotine-phlegm coated, mid-song, trademark honking is as immediately recognizable, and identifiable, as a Keith Richards Stones riff. To the Blues faithful, that is.

While I have long been familiar with Bland's earlier work, it wasn't until a couple of months ago, through a friend's recommendation (thanks Thom), that I discovered the . . .

Dinosaur Jr. :: Where You Been

The past few years have found me slowly re-building my Dinosaur Jr. collection -- piecemeal. Sometime in the mid-late '90s, while living in Athens, GA as a student, I sold the majority of it off to various downtown record stores. Now, a decade later I'm re-purchasing it. Actually, I find myself doing this a lot; most likely a by-product combination of being a) a collector, and b) slightly neurotic. Whatever.

I (thankfully) do not have that seemingly unyielding preference for pre or post . . .

Amazing Journey :: The Story of the Who (DVD)

“The Who is a bloody wild animal and it has to be fed chunks of raw meat and Southern Comfort. It can’t feed on anything less.” — Pete Townshend, New York Times, June 13th, 1974.

The Who: bombastic, excessive, crude, vulgar, drunk, and unfashionably fucking awesome. That is what I penned in 2005 immediately following a viewing of The Who's 1979 doc become a member or log in.

A Soundtrack Enthusiast :: Mean Streets (1973)

Originally titled Season of The Witch, Mean Streets is both an accomplishment in film in its own right, as well as a blueprint for the themes and motifs Martin Scorsese would later expand on and finesse for the next three decades. It's all here: Cosa Nostra, religious devotion an doubt, moral contradiction, loyalty, family, and of course, violence. What also began with Mean Streets was the filmmakers relationship with, and use . . .

Retro TV Themes Revisited :: Sanford and Son

Happy New Year's eve. Lots of new features on ye olde Drunkard to keep an eye out for in 2008 - the first of which, Retro TV Themes Revisited, you got a sneak peak of earlier in the month via the Diff'rent Strokes theme. The feature aims to mine our long-running collection of past television (aural) glories. Have at it in the comments.

The Reverend Al Green :: Full Gospel Tabernacle

December 16th, while in Memphis, TN, ranks up as one of the finest Sundays I have yet to experience. And I ain't talking about no ice cream treat neither. Yeah, that's right, I'm talking about day seven of the week. A brief recap: Woke up - the temperature a crisp 36 degrees - got in the car with my lady-friend and headed out to the Reverend Al Green's Full Gospel Tabernacle. Yup, that Al Green

Funkadelic :: Red Hot Mama From Louisiana

Just returned to Los Angeles last night after three weeks back in the southeast, both working, and for the holidays. While traveling, I had made a mental note to make sure and throw up Funkadelic's "Red Hot Mama" on the blog when I got back, as it got stuck in my head while driving east on I-10 out of New Orleans. In the late nineties this tune made many a mix tape compilation, and is indicative of the side of Clinton's music . . .

Off The Record :: Frankel (Los Angeles, CA)

Off The Record is a recurring, feature here on the Drunkard, that marries two of my greatest interests; music and travel. Having a locals perspective when visiting a new locale is the difference between experiencing it through the lens of a tourist and of that of a native.

Off The Record gathers some of my favorite artists, asks them to reflect on their city of residence, and choose a handful of places they could not live without, be them bookstores, bars, restaurants or vistas.

Murder Ballads and Disaster Songs…

Doom and gloom, baby. It is well documented that we Americans live in a country forged in strife. Since the very beginning our history has been bound to various disasters, calamities and murder. Hell, it still is. The Tomkins Square folks know this well and have dutifully compiled the extensive box set People Take Warning!: Murder Ballads and Disaster Songs spanning . . .
