Guano Padano :: Ramblin’ Man

As I've mentioned previously, I keep a folder on my macbook designated for the sole purpose of collecting songs for an imaginary David Lynch soundtrack. Experimental Italian Americana act, Guano Padano, do a cover of Hank Williams' "Ramblin' Man" that absolutely fits the bill, and is the latest addition to the pile. Those familiar with Lynch's score and soundtrack work, with longtime collaborator Angelo Badalamenti, will immediately catch my drift.

I was initially hipped to . . .

Dirt Dress :: Cassette Style

There's a certain thrill in walking into a club to a new sound that instantly grabs you; when your first reaction, before bobbing your head, is to ask yourself, "Where do I get more of this?" Dirt Dress puts on such a show, and luckily, to the initial listener, their recorded output is just as captivating.

Harlem :: Hippies

Over at the Matalbog, Gerard Cosloy updates us on the status of the upcoming (April 6, 2010) Harlem album, Hippies. Deets, plus a taste off the LP, below.

...the resulting 16-song pop meisterwerk, recorded with the assistance of Mike McHugh, reveals the triumvirate of Coomers, Curtis and Jose in fine fettle. The gents really “knocked it out of the park” as ice hockey fans are so fond of saying, but we remain hopeful, if not confident . . .

Decade :: Fleet Foxes, S/T (2008)

What is it that makes us want to deconstruct art by units of time? Lists. We love making them. We love arguing over them. And here, on the verge of a new decade, we’re in a position to do the same again. What were the best albums of the past ten years?

Here at AD, we started talking it through and decided we weren’t going to add to the cacophony of lists being put out by various music pubs. There are enough of those. Since the beginning of October, Monday through Friday, we have been featuring posts detailing . . .

Sunday :: Aquarium Drunkard & Origami Vinyl: Decade Party

This Sunday night (12/13) we're tagging up with our friends at Origami Vinyl, in Echo Park, to celebrate Aquarium Drunkard's decade in review. While we won't finish on the blog until December 31st, Origami has our master list of AD's favorites, and is stocking as many of them in vinyl as possible. This is a good time to ask Santa for that turntable you've been pining for.

The party is free and so is . . .

Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas

It's the second week of December. The egg nog is spiked. Our Christmas tree has been purchased, trimmed and decorated, and it has actually been (kinda) seasonally chilly here in L.A. the past few days. Having said that, I think the holiday-related posts can officially begin, and I can tell you there is no better way to do so than with this unsanctioned soundtrack to Jim Henson's Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas. If you grew up in the 80s then this really needs no further explanation. Welcome to Frogtown Hollow.

Wolf People :: Village Strollin’

London's Wolf People have an album out early next year; the first under their new label home at Jagjaguwar. AD has a feature with them in the works, but until then I wanted to share the below track culled from the compilation A Psychedelic Guide to Monsterism Island. An instrumental, the track moves in a vein reminiscent of the early '70s English hybrid . . .

Sharon Van Etten

Information. We crave it, store it, need it. Thrive on it. When I am out and about I am constantly making notes in my phone: lists, things to look up, research, read. And at the same time there is a conflict -- a part of me that laments the time before widespread google-ability, which, really, in the grand scheme of things, wasn't all that long ago. A time when there was, if only a little, a bit of mystery left in the world.

I first heard Sharon Van Etten . . .

Bobb Trimble :: Iron Curtain Innocence/Harvest of Dreams

Releasing two great underappreciated records in the early 80s (private press — real lo-fi), there is no one quite like Bobb Trimble in the world of rock n roll. His vision is very deep, personal, and absolutely original with a strong outsider, late night feel. While his music was totally out of sync with the times, Bobb waved the psych flag high and proud and managed to find an audience among 60s record collectors.
