Jason Lytle :: The AD Interview

Jason Lytle is a name whose return will most definitely excite a number of you reading. As the former center of the band Grandaddy, Lytle's songwriting carved a unique and cultishly adored niche in indie rock. After the band called it quits preceding the release of their final album, become a member or log in.

He’s Simple, He’s Dumb, He’s the Pilot

Tomorrow we're running the AD Interview with Jason Lytle.   With the exception of his performance at our SXSW party last month, there have been scarce newsworthy opportunities to write about the former Grandaddy frontman since the release of their 2006 swan song Just Like The Fambly Cat.

Black Monk Time/The Early Years 1964-1965

"This is a damned enjoyable slightly kinky 60's garage record"- Iggy Pop

Relatively unknown outside sixties garage enthusiast circles, The Monks were fantastic.   If you're not familiar, the story - in a nutshell - is that five US GI's, while stationed in Germany, started a band, were discharged from the army and decided to stick around making music. Light In The Attic Records has just issued both the groups Black Monk Time LP as well . . .

Sonic Youth :: Sacred Trickster (Via The Eternal)

I've spent roughly a week and a half with Sonic Youth's upcoming LP The Eternal (SY's Matador Records debut). Remember in February when we we discussed event albums?   Well, this is most definitely one of mine.   The label just released the album's lead off track, "Sacred Trickster"

Enter The Vaselines :: The Definitive Package

If you were to compile a short list of seminal albums that became the building blocks of your current musical tastes, you would most likely find that within the span of, say, 10 to 15 releases you could nail down the roots of what it is that really "grabs" you.   And by that, I mean the albums that initially lit the spark for the appreciation of divergent genres and sub-genres. When it comes to all things 'indie-pop', my enduring appreciation stems from a 1993 purchase, at sixteen, of the become a member or log in.

Diversions :: The Antlers/Concept Albums

(Diversions, a new feature on Aquarium Drunkard, catches up with our favorite artists as they wax on subjects other than recording and performing.)

This, the third installment of Diversions, finds us with Peter Silberman, founder of the Brooklyn based trio The Antlers.   Self-released last month, the group's new LP, Hospice, has been making the rounds of those in the know, touted as one of the year's best kept secrets (I would have to agree . . .

Iron & Wine :: Around The Well (May 19th)

Saturday, April 18th, marked the second annual Record Store Day which by all accounts was a great success. Iron & Wine were among the various artists and labels who were offering up limited edition vinyl LPs, split 7 inches, live sets, and EPs to help raise awareness and attract buyers. To commemorate the occasion Sam Beam and company threw their hat in the ring with the release of an 18 track live CD recorded in June of 2005 while on tour in . . .

Under The Covers :: Mystifies Me

In comparing an original song to a cover, it usually makes sense to discuss the qualities that defined the original in relation to how the cover treats the material.    But so many of us obtain knowledge of a song in the backwards way - cover first - that it can be just as insightful to look at how that experience shapes our perceptions of the original. That's how I came to know "Mystifies Me," originally recorded by Ron Wood, but brought to me via . . .

Madman Across The Water (Tumbleweed Version)

Before the pomp, before the flair, and before the pageantry/self-caricature, there was 1970's Tumbleweed Connection. No Donald Duck stage costumes or Victorian era wigs to be found; in their stead is a collection of songs that mark some of Elton John's most earnest vocals coupled with lyricist Bernie Taupin's ever thematic songwriting. Lyrically, the LP focuses on Taupin's fascination with the mythical 'old' west; something made even more interesting as, allegedly, he had never set foot . . .

Superchunk :: Leaves In The Gutter

Really, could there be a better moment for new Superchunk sounds than during the 20th anniversary of the record label they founded? Not hardly. But it's also been over seven years since the last release of any new music from the band, so anything at this point is welcome. The band's last two full-length LPs of new material - 1999's Come . . .

The New York Times on The Grateful Dead

Last week the New York Times ran a piece dissecting the appreciation/levels/fandom of the Grateful Dead.   Excerpt:

My Morning Jacket :: WFPK 91.9; 12.21.01

So, are you the type of person to buy holiday wrapping paper on December 26th?   How about winter coats and wool sweaters in May?   No?   Me neither, but if you count yourself as an early My Morning Jacket fan I would strongly recommend going against habit and downloading the following holiday set from 2001.   Recorded December 21st at WFPK 91.9, in the band's hometown of Louisville, KY, the session originally aired Christmas day of 2001. Go ahead, file the set away and unpack it eight . . .
