I was recently given a vinyl copy of Dengue Fever's second album Escape From Dragon House; an LP I hadn't listened to since its initial 2007 release on CD. One component that has long been a feather in their cap is that . . .

While AD opted for a limited 2008 year-end wrap up, I can assure you that, had we each listed our top twenty LPs of the year, Women's self-titled debut would have most definitely made the bottom half of the list. Comprised of become a member or log in.
Repost: Crosby's 1970 outtakes (aka, Perro tapes)
One of my favorite LPs from the early '70s is David Crosby's underrated masterpiece If I Could Only Remember My Name? A fully realized embodiment of the sound of California's folk/rock/country/psychedelia movement of the time, the album features such players as Neil Young, Jerry Garcia, Joni Mitchell, Phil Lesh, etc., etc. Almost as good as the album (and just as, if not more, interesting) are these outtakes from the 1970 sessions. These tracks are further proof . . .

What better way to stoke the fire for 2009 than by releasing an EP hot on the heels of near ubiquitous year-end praise for your debut LP? (Including a #2 slot here at AD.) Bon Iver has done just that with the Blood Bank four-song EP that . . .

Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni's film Blow Up, from 1966, left a lasting impression on me. Its depiction of mod-cool, sixties London, is aesthetically on point throughout its entirety -- and that's not even taking in consideration the actual (murder mystery) plot, which itself is both meandering (in the style of sixties art-house) and engrossing.
The Music: The majority of the film is scored by Herbie Hancock, which, while appropriate, pales in comparison to become a member or log in.
Alejandro Escovedo’s cover of Gun Club’s “Sex Beat” has been posted here before and played many a time on my radio show over the years as well. Why? Because like any good re-interpretation, it takes the song’s bare essence and spins it until it becomes something entirely different – and yet it hangs on to the the original sense of purpose the songwriter . . .

No, the photo to the left is not of Stephen Malkmus (although the resemblance is quite uncanny, no?) Even today the majority of Zeppelin fans still do not know that the band's epic “Dazed And Confused,” off their eponymous debut, was in actuality a cover tune. During a U.S. American tour in the late ’60s the Jimmy Page led version of the Yardbirds shared a NYC Greenwich Village . . .

Off The Record is a recurring feature here on the Drunkard that marries two of my greatest interests; music and travel. Having a locals perspective when visiting a new locale is the difference between experiencing it through the lens of a tourist and of that of a native.
Off The Record gathers some of my favorite artists, asks them to reflect on their city of residence, and choose a handful of places they could not live without, be them bookstores, bars, restaurants or vistas.
Today’s installment of Off The Record finds us in . . .

Our label, Autumn Tone Records, had its most, ahem, action-packed year yet with the release of three new albums, plus the digital distribution of J. Tillman's back-catalog (and his other band Fleet Foxes produced our favorite album of 2008). Last Spring saw the release of Travel by Sea's sophomore LP, become a member or log in.
